In Boston-Black Lives Matter Support Stand-Out -May 18th

  *   *
BLMsignDPP is starting a monthly “Standout for Black Lives” at Ashmont T station plaza on Thursday, May 18, 5:30-6:30 pm at the corner of Ashmont St. and Dorchester Ave.  We'll do this visibility action for just one hour, at the same time, on the third Thursday of each month:  May 18, June 15, July 20, August 17, etc.

As a majority white organization, DPP wants to make our opposition to white supremacy visible, especially to white people living nearby or commuting through Dorchester at rush hour to whiter neighborhoods to the south.  We will hold a big“We Believe Black Lives Matter” banner and Black Lives Matter signs (including about a variety of issues that impact Black lives), and hand out fliers to pedestrians and drivers stopped at red lights.  As we do in our other street outreach about racial justice, we will listen and engage cheerfully and respectfully with anyone who may disagree with us, and NOT argue or preach. All are welcome to join us

NEW WARS / OLD WARS – What Could Possibly Go Wrong

Will Trump agree to the Pentagon's permanent war in Iraq, Afghanistan and Syria?
The two top national security officials in the Trump administration – Secretary of Defence James Mattis and national security adviser HR McMaster - are trying to secure long-term US ground and air combat roles in the three long-running wars in the greater Middle East – Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria. Proposals for each of the three countries are still being developed, and there is no consensus, even between Mattis and McMaster, on the details of the plans. They will be submitted to Trump separately, with the plan for Afghanistan coming sometime before a NATO summit in Brussels on 25 May. But if this power play succeeds in one or more of the three, it could guarantee the extension of permanent US ground combat in the greater Middle East for many years to come - and would represent a culmination of the “generational war” first announced by the George W Bush administration.  More

President Trump’s decision to provide weapons to the Syrian Kurds, who are fighting Isis, potentially marks a crucial change in the political geography of the Middle East. In effect, the US is choosing to support its Kurdish ally in Syria, in defiance of Turkey, whose aim is to prevent the establishment of a quasi-independent Kurdish state there… Turkey has sought in vain to persuade the US to break its alliance with the Syrian Kurds, accusing the YPG of being the Syrian arm of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) that has been waging a guerrilla war against the Turkish state since 1984. “Both the PKK and the YPG are terrorist organizations and they are no different, apart from their names,” said Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavasoglu on Tuesday. “Every weapon seized by them is a threat to Turkey.” … The public decision by Mr Trump to send heavier weapons to the YPG is important primarily as a sign that the US is ignoring Turkish threats and will stick to its military alliance with the Syrian Kurds, which has served it well. This makes it difficult for the Turkish army and air force to escalate its attacks on the YPG.  More

ANDREW BACEVICH:
Key Issues That Neither the Washington Elite Nor the Media Consider Worth Their Bother
As practiced in the United States, with certain honorable (and hence unprofitable) exceptions, journalism remains superficial, voyeuristic, and governed by the attention span of a two year old.  As a result, all those editors, reporters, columnists, and talking heads who characterize their labors as “now more important than ever” ill-serve the public they profess to inform and enlighten.  Rather than clearing the air, they befog it further… How much damage Donald Trump’s presidency wreaks before it ends remains to be seen.  Yet he himself is a transient phenomenon.  To allow his pratfalls and shenanigans to divert attention from matters sure to persist when he finally departs the stage is to make a grievous error.  It may well be that, as the Times insists, the truth is now more important than ever.  If so, finding the truth requires looking in the right places and asking the right questions.   More

There Is Growing Bipartisan Opposition to Trump’s Unauthorized Military Actions
There is an easy way to determine whether a member of Congress is bearing true faith and allegiance to their oath to “support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic.”  If a they demand that presidents of both parties seek congressional approval for military action, the oath is being taken seriously. If they don’t, the oath is abandoned—and, with it, any sense of duty to defend the most basic premises of the American experiment.  Under President Trump, the tests are coming on a regular basis as the administration rolls roughshod over a system of checks and balances that House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wisconsin, and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell are more than willing to sacrifice on the altar of party loyalty. Not all Republicans are willing to accept the Trump’s administration’s shredding of the Constitution, however, and that’s important — as there is an urgent humanitarian need for a bipartisan defense of the authority of Congress to check and balance the executive branch.   More

Image result for cartoon turkey US kurds syriaTHE SILENT SLAUGHTER OF THE US AIR WAR
When “Shock and Awe” was unleashed on Iraq in 2003, it dominated the news all over the world. But after eight years of “disguised, quiet, media-free” warunder President Obama, the U.S. mass media don’t even treat the daily slaughter from this heavier, more sustained bombardment of Iraq and Syria as news. They cover single mass casualty events for a few days, but quickly resume normal “Trump Show” programming…  There is almost no political debate in the U.S. over the rights and wrongs of the U.S. bombing campaign in Iraq and Syria. Never mind that bombing Syria without authorization from its internationally recognized government is a crime of aggression and a violation of the U.N. Charter.  The freedom of the United States to violate the U.N. Charter at will has already been politically (not legally!) normalized by 17 years of serial aggression, from the bombing of Yugoslavia in 1999 to the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq, to drone strikes in Pakistan and Yemen. So who will enforce the Charter now to protect civilians in Syria, who already face violence and death from all sides in a bloody civil and proxy war, in which the U.S. was already deeply complicit well before it began bombing Syria in 2014?  More

The War on Terror Is a War of Chaos
Here’s a footnote to America’s present wars that’s worth pondering for a few moments. The U.S. Air Force is running out of ordinary bombs, smart bombs, and in some cases missiles. No kidding. The air war over Syria and Iraq that began in August 2014 and is now two-and-a-half years old has eaten through America’s supply of bombs. The usual crew of weapons makers evidently can’t produce such munitions fast enough to keep up, so the U.S. military is, for instance, cutting into its stockpiles of smart bombs in Asia to send some to the Middle East and Africa simply to keep pace with demand -- and, according to recent reports, it may nonetheless be failing to do so. Consider this a longer term problem since, in the era of Donald Trump, the generals are increasingly running their own wars, which, if the daily drumbeat of news about them is accurate, are only ramping up further.   More

WARS ABROAD, WARS AT HOME

Image result for Homeownership and InequalityHow Homeownership Became the Engine of American Inequality
When we think of entitlement programs, Social Security and Medicare immediately come to mind. But by any fair standard, the holy trinity of United States social policy should also include the mortgage-interest deduction — an enormous benefit that has also become politically untouchable…  The owner-renter divide is as salient as any other in this nation, and this divide is a historical result of statecraft designed to protect and promote inequality. Ours was not always a nation of homeowners; the New Deal fashioned it so, particularly through the G.I. Bill of Rights…  But both in its design and its application, the G.I. Bill excluded a large number of citizens. To get the New Deal through Congress, Franklin Roosevelt needed to appease the Southern arm of the Democratic Party. So he acquiesced when Congress blocked many nonwhites, particularly African-Americans, from accessing his newly created ladders of opportunity. Farm work, housekeeping and other jobs disproportionately staffed by African-Americans were omitted from programs like Social Security and unemployment insurance. Local Veterans Affairs centers and other entities loyal to Jim Crow did their parts as well, systematically denying nonwhite veterans access to the G.I. Bill…  From 1934 to 1968, the official F.H.A. policy of redlining made homeownership virtually impossible in black communities. “The consequences proved profound,” writes the historian Ira Katznelson in his perfectly titled book, “When Affirmative Action Was White.”   More

AMERICA IS GETTING RICHER EVERY YEAR. THE AMERICAN WORKER IS NOT.
Stagnant or falling earnings have put a squeeze on working- and middle-class households. The trend has also widened the gap between the rich and everyone else as, overall, the economy has continued to grow overall but the bulk of those gains have ended up in the pockets of the affluent.
These are some of the conclusions from a new working paper by a group of economists investigating the reasons for the decline of the American middle class. While economists have been concerned about recent data on earnings, the new paper suggests that ordinary Americans have been dealing with serious economic problems for much longer than may be widely recognized…  For instance, the typical 27-year-old man’s annual earnings in 2013 were 31 percent less than those of a typical 27-year-old man in 1969. The data suggest that today’s young men are unlikely to make up for that decline by earning more in the future.   More

Related imageWhat a new report reveals about white economic hardship and Trump’s big win
Roughly a third of white working-class Americans said that they have cut back on food or meals in the past year to save money. A similar share it would be difficult — if not impossible — for them to cover an emergency expense of $400. And among those who live in the same town where they grew up, only 17 percent say the quality of life there has improved…  The report reveals the economic and material hardships afflicting the white working class, one of the report's authors says, lending insight into why so many people in this group were willing to gamble on Donald Trump, a candidate with no governing experience… Indeed, when it comes to policy details, the white working class supports many economic proposals associated with Democrats, not Republicans. Fifty-three percent of those surveyed supported increasing the minimum wage to $15 an hour, and 58 percent said the rich should pay more in taxes. (Those figures are similar to the results for the general population.)   More

The American Way of War Is a Budget-Breaker
In this century of nonstop military conflict, the American public has never fully confronted the immense costs of the wars being waged in its name.  The human costs -- including an estimated 370,000 deaths, more than half of them civilians, and the millions who have been uprooted from their homes and sent into flight, often across national borders -- are surely the most devastating consequences of these conflicts.  But the economic costs of our recent wars should not be ignored, both because they are so massive in their own right and because of the many peaceable opportunities foregone to pay for them…  Overall, as presently imagined, the Trump budget would hike the Pentagon’s cut of the pie, and related spending on veterans' affairs, homeland security, and nuclear weapons to an astounding 68% of federal discretionary spending. And keep in mind that the discretionary budget includes virtually everything the government does outside of entitlement programs like Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid. You undoubtedly won’t be surprised to learn that perpetual war and the urge to perpetuate yet more of it leaves little room for spending on the environment, diplomacy, alternative energy, housing, or other domestic investments, not to speak of infrastructure repair.  Put another way, preparations for and the pursuit of war will ensure that any future America is dirtier, sicker, poorer, more rickety, and less safe.   More

The Conviction of an Activist for Laughing Portends Repression of Protest Under Trump
A year in jail for laughing.  That's not a scenario from a dystopian movie set in some far-off future under a repressive government. It's the sentence that Code Pink activist Desiree Fairooz is facing after being convicted in early May of disorderly conduct for -- yes -- laughing during the confirmation hearing of new Attorney General Jeff Sessions…  These convictions are a troubling sign of what's in store for our right to dissent under the Trump administration.  In the past several months, lawmakers -- mainly Republicans -- in several states have tried to pass, and in some cases succeeded in passing, legislation curbing the right to protest, increasing fines and penalties for those who do engage in protest, or expanding the right of private entities or the state to pursue damages from individuals and groups who engage in protest.  In early April,  Common Dreams reported that proposed laws in at least 19 states would curtail protest rights -- and that number is growing.  More

Puerto Rico’s $123 Billion Bankruptcy Is the Cost of U.S. Colonialism
Puerto Rico is the largest overseas territory still under the sovereign control of the United States, and it is the most important colonial possession in this nation’s history. That relationship produced uncommon profits for American subsidiaries on the island for more than a century, even as the federal government kept claiming that the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, created in 1952, was a self-governing territory.  But now, with a Washington-appointed board directly overseeing the island’s economy, and with a pivotal Supreme Court decision last year affirming that Congress continues to exercise sovereign power over Puerto Rico, the mask of self-governance has been removed.
The old commonwealth is effectively dead. Absent a huge infusion of U.S. public dollars to prop up its collapsing economy, a scenario that is nearly impossible with a Trump White House and a Republican-controlled Congress, that relationship cannot be revived. Political leaders in both Washington and San Juan, whether they like it or not, are being propelled to fashion a new political and economic status for the territory. They will have to finally decide whether to completely annex Puerto Rico as the 51st state or acknowledge that it still remains a distinct nation, with the right its own sovereignty and independence.   More

Veterans For Peace 2017 Resolutions

Every summer members of VFP are given the opportunity to shape organization policy by submitting resolutions that are reviewed and voted on by the membership. Resolutions approved in previous years can be viewed at our Master Index.

For the yearly resolution process, this starts approximately 90 days before the start of the annual VFP Convention when resolutions start to be accepted and close 30 days prior to the start of the pre-Convention Board of Directors meeting. For 2017 the first day resolutions could be submitted was May 1st and the deadline for submission is July 9th.

Check out this helpful note of tips from Bob Krzewinski – VFP Resolutions Committee Chair

Wage Peace, Not War in Korea!

We have advocated that the real solution to the continuing military tension in Korea is to end the Korean War officially with a peace treaty, not just focusing on denuclearization in N. Korea. But it is unclear at this time when Trump will pivot from military pressure to direct talks with North Korea. Thus, it is critical for our VFP members and supporters to engage in sustained public advocacy for permanent peace in Korea.
Take Action Today:
  • Write an Op-Ed to your Local Paper. (See Ann Wright’s excellent Op-Ed “A Path Forward on N. Korea” for an example)
  • Hold a peace vigil for Korea
  • Promote the Korea Peace Campaign Video on the Korean War
  • Urge the White House and Congress to end the Korean War now with a peace treaty.
    • White House 202-456-1111
    • Congress  202-224-3121 (Find your representative)
Stop threatening N. Korea, Start talking! Wage Peace, not War in Korea!

VFP Delegation to Cuba

Last week, 7 members of Veterans For Peace were on a delegation in Cuba, attending the 5th annual international seminar on the Abolition of Foreign Military Bases. 250 delegates from around the world were present at the seminar, representing communities that are impacted by U.S militarism.
Ann Wright, VFP advisory board member, presented on the first day of the seminar, providing an analysis of ‘The Trump Administration, the Middle East, and the US Military Base in Guantanamo.’ Ann Wright is a former U.S diplomat who resigned from Bush’s cabinet in opposition to the Iraq War in 2003 and has spent the past 14 years protesting U.S wars and working for peace.

Chelsea Manning Will Be Free

Chelsea Manning will be released from prison this coming Wednesday, May 17.  Veterans For Peace is celebrating her freedom.  We are so grateful to Chelsea for her courage in releasing U.S. Army documents that allowed the public to know the truth about the U.S. wars and occupations of Afghanistan and Iraq.  She did not deserve the torture, solitary confinement, abuse and imprisonment these last 7 years, which was a longer sentence than any U.S. whistleblower has had to endure.  The 35-year prison sentence given to Chelsea by a politically motivated Army court martial was an obscenity.  Fortunately, a broad-based support movement of peace, civil liberties and LGBT rights groups was able to convince President Obama to commute her sentence.

Interested in sailing on the historic anti-nuclear peace boat, the Golden Rule?  It's fun!

Some crew will not have sailing experience, but most will have at least some.  Our skippers will be very experienced in the area that they sail - on the coast, in San Francisco Bay, up the Sacramento River as far  as Sacramento, or San Diego Bay.  This year we will offer a modest stipend for licensed captains.

Fill out the form by May 15 - we set sail from Humboldt Bay in northern California June 10 and arrive in San Diego August 22.  While in San Diego all winter, we could use crew, too!

Mother's Day-A Day For Peace

Former Peace Club members who served as interns
Mother’s Day began as a call to action to improve the lives of families through health and peace. Ann Jarvis of Appalachia founded Mother’s Day in 1858 to promote sanitation in response to high infant mortality. After the Civil War, abolitionist Julia Ward Howe made a Mother’s Day call to women to protest the carnage of war.
"From the bosom of the devastated Earth a voice goes up with our own. It says: “Disarm! Disarm! The sword of murder is not the balance of justice.” Blood does not wipe out dishonor, nor violence indicate possession. As men have often forsaken the plough and the anvil at the summons of war, Let women now leave all that may be left of home for a great and earnest day of counsel.'

Chelsea Manning Will Be Free!

May 12, 2017
OH HAPPY DAY!  CHELSEA MANNING WILL BE FREE!
by Gerry Condon
Veterans For Peace applauds Chelsea Manning for her courage in publicly embracing her identity as a woman, even in the midst of being persecuted by the U.S. government.  Chelsea has become a role model and a cause celebre in the movement for transgender rights.  She has also become a popular author, regularly writing in the Guardian on issues of transparency and whistleblower protection.
Chelsea is thanking her supporters.  Here is a statement she has issued before her release:
“For the first time, I can see a future for myself as Chelsea.I can imagine surviving and living as the person who I am and can finally be in the outside world. Freedom used to be something that I dreamed of but never allowed myself to fully imagine. Now, freedom is something that I will again experience with friends and loved ones after nearly seven years of bars and cement, of periods of solitary confinement, and of my health care and autonomy restricted, including through routinely forced haircuts. I am forever grateful to the people who kept me alive, President Obama, my legal team and countless supporters.
“I watched the world change from inside prison walls and through the letters that I have received from veterans, trans young people, parents, politicians and artists. My spirits were lifted in dark times, reading of their support, sharing in their triumphs, and helping them through challenges of their own. I hope to take the lessons that I have learned, the love that I have been given, and the hope that I have to work toward making life better for others.”
Veterans For Peace gives a big shout out to Courage To Resist, headed up by VFP member Jeff Paterson, for launching the Chelsea Manning Support Network, and for working relentlessly for years to build a broad-based movement to free Chelsea Manning.  Courage To Resist is celebrating Chelsea Manning’s release with a number of special features on their website, including information on how you can donate to the Chelsea Manning, so that she will have resources as she transitions to her new life.
Kudos also go to the many VFP members who supported Chelsea Manning,in protest actions at Marine Brig in Quantico, Virginia, outside Fort Meade, Maryland, where many of us attended Chelsea’s court martial, and outside the military prison at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.  Some of you were arrested for Chelsea. Many of you donated substantially to her defense fund. If anything, your support even increased after Bradley became Chelsea.  Bravo!  And how great to have some good news to celebrate!
Veterans For Peace is proud to have supported Chelsea Manning.  We recommit ourselves to supporting GI resisters and whistleblowers.  The U.S. people deserve to know the truth about what our government is doing around the globe.  War resisters and whistleblower will be more likely to take risks for peace if they know we have their back.
Take a moment on Wednesday – maybe get together with a few friends –  to think about Chelsea Manning as she walks out the gates of Leavenworth, a free woman.  This is a victory for all.
