The United States just came very close to attacking Iran. Sign my petition: Congress must assert its constitutional authority and stop Donald Trump from going to war with Iran without Congressional approval.

Alfred -
Yesterday we learned that the United States came very close to striking targets inside Iran in response to the downing of a U.S. drone in the Persian Gulf.
Last week the White House announced thousands of additional troops would be sent to the Middle East in response to the alleged Iranian attack on two oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman.
Last month, the New York Times reported that the Pentagon had presented a plan to the White House that envisions sending as many as 120,000 troops to the region to fight Iran.
Mark my words. A war in Iran would make the Iraq war look like a walk in the park. It would be an unmitigated disaster.
If the United States were to attack Iran, Iran could respond with attacks on U.S. troops and on countries around the region. It would lead to the further destabilization of that region in a way that is unimaginable and would result in wars that would go on year after year and likely cost trillions of dollars.
Taking us into a war without Congressional authorization would be unconstitutional and illegal. The United States Congress must do everything it can to prevent this war. The Constitution is very clear: It is Congress, not the president, who decides when we go to war.
And it is long past time for my colleagues in Congress to reassert that authority.
Please add your name if you agree:
Sixteen years ago, the United States committed one of the worst foreign policy blunders in the history of our country by attacking Iraq. That war was sold to the American people based on a series of lies about weapons of mass destruction. One of the leading advocates for that war was John Bolton, who served as a member of the Bush administration, and is now Trump’s national security adviser. Incredibly, even today, Bolton is one of the few remaining people in the world who continues to believe that the Iraq war was a good idea.
That war led to the deaths of more than 4,400 American troops, with tens of thousands of American soldiers wounded, many severely, and hundreds of thousands of Iraqi civilians killed. It unleashed a wave of radicalism and destabilization across the region that we will be dealing with for many years to come. It was the biggest foreign policy disaster in American history.
Voices of dissent went unheeded in the lead-up to the Iraq war. They must be heeded now.
We also need the people themselves to speak up and make themselves heard. Earlier this year, we made history in Congress by passing, for the first time in forty years, a War Powers Resolution to withdraw the United States from an illegal and unauthorized war in Yemen.
We did this with the strong support of a trans-partisan grassroots coalition, with progressives and conservatives working together to bring sanity to our foreign policy. We need those same voices to make clear to the Congress and to the reflexively hawkish, interventionist foreign policy establishment here in Washington that we will not accept another American war in the Middle East.
If you agree that we must not allow Trump to go to war with Iran on his own, please add your name to my petition:
When we are in the White House, we will pursue a course that resolves conflicts peacefully, not through endless war.
In solidarity,
Bernie Sanders
We cannot allow Donald Trump to decide to start a war with Iran when he feels like it.

Sign my petition: tell Congress to pass legislation that would prohibit military action against Iran without Congressional approval.

Kshama Sawant is proud to NOT be endorsed by corporate PACs Socialist Alternative

Socialist Alternative<newsletter@socialistalternative.org>
Please see below for an update on the campaign to re-elect Socialist Alternative Seattle City Councilmember Kshama Sawant
Al,
CASE, the Chamber of Commerce's corporate PAC which includes a $200,000 donation from Amazon, has just announced their endorsements for Seattle City Council. They are joining a PAC with the deceptively friendly name “Seattle Hospitality for Progress” (funded by many of the restaurant groups which fought tooth-and-nail against our movement for $15/hr) in endorsing one of our business-friendly opponents.

This comes as no surprise — we didn't apply for their endorsement, because Kshama Sawant is not for sale. As always, she does not accept a penny from corporations, CEOs, business lobbyists, or big developers. This campaign is funded entirely through donations from working people like yourself.

Already, corporate PACs have amassed an unprecedented warchest of over one million dollars, with $200,000 from Amazon alone. This year, big business has made it clear that they want ‘anybody but Kshama Sawant’ for District 3. Why? Because they know that Kshama's socialist City Council office has not only been unshakably accountable to working people — it's been incredibly effective.

We are proud to NOT be endorsed by corporate PACs. Instead of seeking endorsements from corporate PACs, we already have a clear lead in support from working people, with endorsements from 12 unions, as well as progressive organizations like the Sierra Club, and more donors from District 3, Seattle, and Washington State than any other candidate.

Corporate PACs are preparing to go all out this year to stop us. They will unleash floods of attack mail and potentially even tv ads attacking Kshama Sawant. While we may not be able to match them dollar for dollar, we will build the biggest grassroots campaign Seattle has ever seen.

But even grassroots campaigns cost money. We need to raise $20,000 by July 1 to prepare for the most powerful Get out the Vote operation in Seattle in the weeks leading up to the critical primary election vote on August 6. Please donate today to stop Amazon and big business from buying this election. Thank you in advance.
Your $100 donation will let our volunteer team reach 400 voters in District 3 with these flyers:
Your $50 donation will put 10 signs with this design in District 3 residents' yards:
Your $15 donation will print 50 of these posters to build a big rent control rally on July 20:

This is an important night for our campaign. Not only because Bernie will be debating Joe Biden, Kamala Harris, and others, but because volunteers who live near you are stepping up to build this grassroots movement by hosting a community event.
If we can bring people together across the country at these events on Thursday, we will strengthen our campaign and send an important message about the political revolution we are building.
Our movement is up against a whole lot of special interests and establishment money, but if we can create a bottom-up campaign that brings millions of people together, we can win this election and transform our country.
Thank you for being a part of making it happen.
In solidarity,
Team Bernie

On The 60th Anniversary Defend The Gains Of The Cuban Revolution- *Songs To While Away The Class Struggle By- Pete Seeger's "Guantanamera" (Jose Marti)

Click on the title to link a "YouTube" film clip of Pete Seeger performing "Guantanamera."

In this series, presented under the headline “Songs To While Away The Class Struggle By”, I will post some songs that I think will help us get through the “dog days” of the struggle for our communist future. I do not vouch for the political thrust of the songs; for the most part they are done by pacifists, social democrats, hell, even just plain old ordinary democrats. And, occasionally, a communist, although hard communist musicians have historically been scarce on the ground. Thus, here we have a regular "popular front" on the music scene. While this would not be acceptable for our political prospects, it will suffice for our purposes here. Markin.

GUANTANAMERA

Original music by Jose Fernandez Diaz
Music adaptation by Pete Seeger & Julian Orbon
Lyric adaptation by Julian Orbon, based on a poem by Jose Marti

Yo soy un hombre sincero
De donde crecen las palmas
Yo soy un hombre sincero
De donde crecen las palmas
Y antes de morirme quiero
Echar mis versos del alma

Chorus:
Guantanamera
Guajira Guantanamera
Guantanamera
Guajira Guantanamera

Mi verso es de un verde claro
Y de un carmin encendido
Mi verso es de un verde claro
Y de un carmin encendido
Mi verso es un ciervo herido
Que busca en el monte amparo

Chorus

I am a truthful man from this land of palm trees
Before dying I want to share these poems of my soul
My verses are light green
But they are also flaming red

(the next verse says,)
I cultivate a rose in June and in January
For the sincere friend who gives me his hand
And for the cruel one who would tear out this
heart with which I live
I do not cultivate thistles nor nettles
I cultivate a white rose

Cultivo la rosa blanca
En junio como en enero
Qultivo la rosa blanca
En junio como en enero
Para el amigo sincero
Que me da su mano franca

Chorus

Y para el cruel que me arranca
El corazon con que vivo
Y para el cruel que me arranca
El corazon con que vivo
Cardo ni ortiga cultivo
Cultivo la rosa blanca

Chorus

Con los pobres de la tierra
Quiero yo mi suerte echar
Con los pobres de la tierra
Quiero yo mi suerte echar
El arroyo de la sierra
Me complace mas que el mar

Chorus

When Marvel Comics Said Something About The Condition Of The World Today-About The Desperate Search For Some Rough Justice In This Wicked Old World-Marvel Studio’s “Black Panther” (2018)-A Film Review

DVD Review

By Leslie Dumont

Black Panther, starring Chadwick Boseman, Michael B. Jordan and a host of black actors who have made their respective marks in Hollywood, directed by Ryan Coogler, 2018

Hey, I wasn’t trying to rain on anybody’s parade when I mentioned at a staff meeting that I did not think that the latest creation out of Marvel Comics Studio the financial blockbuster Black Panther was that interesting a story line given the hype created around the production and the astronomical box office numbers. I wasn’t even attempting to deal with the significance the film might have as the work of an almost totally black cast, black director and set in the virginal non-colonial land of Wakanda which had the added bonus of producing AND keeping its own vital raw resources, or resource is probably a better way to put it. All I knew was that for an over two hour film, seemingly all these Marvel productions need to be over two hours or are not worth the effort despite the hard fact, which is true here as well, that except for the advanced cinematic action technology on display they all could have used a bit more cutting in the editorial offices.

Maybe it is because I was never, ever a devotee of comic books or of films based on them, not even Superman if you can believe that, that I was somewhat cavalier with my comments. Nevertheless, for my blasphemy I was made to walk the plank. Bart Webber who revels in all things comic book and who has over the years done a stellar job of reviewing these Marvel cinematic productions was originally assigned by site manager Greg Green to do this review. But between my frankly merely off-hand comments and Greg’s having listened to a Christopher Lydon NPR Open Source hour on The World Of Wakanda where the old man had every academic he could squeeze in give their views of the world-historic significance of the first serious black comic superhero my number came up.

Since I have already alluded to the story-line weakness, which I do not think overcomes whatever black self-identity and self-worth it may impart on the audiences that watched the film, I will just run with that and let you check out the over-arching social and academic views by checking out the Open Source link above. Meaning I will take my own counsel on letting those factors get decided by time and history about who was right or wrong on the world-historic nature of a certain comic book character. You already know this is about a mystical African land named Wakanda which European imperialism was not able to exploit over the centuries it was in the killing fields of Africa trying to satiate its overweening greed.  No mean task to have done, no question, but which by keeping quiet and keeping it valuable resource hidden from global view was able to prosper.

The minute you say that though you know the dramatic tension is going to be between those who want to get at the “gold” and those who want to keep the damn thing for their own internal use. That drama gets played out big time after the current Wakanda head of state got blown away and caused what amounted to a succession crisis between the legitimate son who wanted to keep to the old ways and the adopted son who wanted to use the Wakanda resources to bring down the neo-imperialism which was retarding post-colonial societal development. And by the way enrich and empower his own ambitions.

Naturally, real or fiction such tensions get a serious workout with first the legitimate son T’Challa (aka Black Panther) gaining the throne through the traditional rites of passage and then the pretender, the “bad guy” N’Jakada, (aka Killmonger) stepping up and asserting his rights also through combat and a preliminary victory. Sounds familiar even if two black guys are running the game this time. Just as naturally after a little time under N’ Jakada and his Pan-African dreams the Wakandans back T’Challa after the requisite number of mock battles and mortal combat between the pair. If I seem to have condensed the storyline too much well I have just done so to show that this is really something that guys could go crazy about, black or white. World-historic it is not and Greg Green and Christopher Lydon’s gushings are not going to change my mind on this one. The only virtue here is if Greg publishes this review he will think twice about not letting Bart Webber go through his paces and drag the story line out like he was being paid by the word.

Free Chelsea Manning! Again - and again!

Free Chelsea Manning!
Again - and again!

https://ymlpmail6.net/imgz/4qjg_image001--145.jpg

Chelsea Manning, the transgender whistleblower who exposed the war crimes of the US and other governments (among which the infamous Collateral Murder video) is back in jail.

She was originally sentenced to 35 years in 2013. Obama commuted her sentence to seven years after more than 100,000 people from around the world petitioned, and many took actions demanding her release.  Chelsea was set free on 17 May 2017.

Now the US government wants revenge and to set an example – no whistleblower should think they can get away with it.

On 8 March 2019, Chelsea was jailed for 62 days (28 in solitary confinement) because she refused to testify against Wikileaks in front of a secret Grand Jury.

Wikileaks’ founder, Julian Assange, is now in jail in London.  Meanwhile the Grand Jury has issued 18 charges which if he is extradited to the US and found guilty could carry a sentence of up to 175 years.

After a week out of jail, Judge Anthony Trenga sent Chelsea back to jail on 16 May. This time he also sentenced her to pay $500 a day after 30 days and $1,000 after 60 days until she accepts to testify. She is challenging this.

Chelsea explained her refusal to testify:

“(…) nothing will convince me to testify before this or any other grand jury for that matter. This experience so far only proves my long held belief that grand juries are simply outdated tools used by the federal government to harass and disrupt political opponents and activists in fishing expeditions,”

See Chelsea’s letter to the judge.

In addition to the injustice of being in jail, Chelsea still needs follow-up care following her gender confirmation surgery – which is not available in detention, putting her at risk of serious medical complications.

Chelsea has defended us – exposing the crimes done in our name by governments and military, speaking out against police killings of people of colour and in support of immigrant people, trans people and others in our communities – we must defend her!

PERSECUTING WHISTLEBLOWERS… Chelsea is not alone. Daniel Hale, an anti-war Air Force veteran and former US intelligence analyst who has spoken out against drone killings was arrested on 9 May and faces up to 50 years in prison for whistleblowing. Reality Winner, an NSA whistleblower who leaked documents about possible election hacking, is 2 years into a 5 year sentence – the longest known prison term for such a media leak.
