Dear All,
This Saturday the U.S. Senate passed
by voice vote
the so-called "Ukraine Freedom Support Act of 2014" (S.2828) sponsored by
Senators Menendez and Corker in response to the appeal by visiting Ukrainian
President Porochenko.
The bill authorizes and encourages new sanctions
against Russia and authorized various types of military equipment to the
Ukrainian government. Sadly, our Senator Markey was one of the co-sponsors.
The bill threatens to drastically worsen the already
bad relationship between the U.S. and Russia, the two nations with the world's
largest nuclear arsenals. It passed without opposition in both chambers between
Thursday and Saturday.

legislation.
The Russian economy is already reeling because of
Western sanctions, and, even more importantly, the dramatic fall in oil prices.
Russia's leadership will be tempted to blame economic problems on the U.S. and
shift any pain resulting from the economic downturn to anger towards the U.S.
Escalation and confrontation are potential results of this latest legislative
attack on Russia if the President signs it into law. Take a stand for
de-escalation and diplomacy -- Ask the president to say no to a new cold
war.
Respectful resolution of differences between Russia
and the U.S. is critical if we are to have any hope of ending the nuclear threat
to human existence. As part of the U.S. peace movement we must raise our voices
to our leaders, to ask them to turn toward negotiation and turn their back on
escalating rhetoric, sanctions and military buildups. It is time to step back,
hit the pause button, and recommit to peaceful negotiations. The world cannot
afford a new Cold War!
Please take a few minutes and send this
message loud and clear to President Obama.
Yours for peace,
Shelagh Foreman Program Director Massachusetts
