 PROTESTERS ARE ARRESTED before Saturday’s christening ceremony at

BATH 

Twelve protesters were arrested Saturday outside Bath Iron Works before a 
ceremony began at the shipyard christening the Michael Monsoor, a guided missile 
destroyer.

Bath police say that 12 people were taken into custody at approximately 9:30 
a.m. and charged with obstructing a public way, a Class E crime. 

Those arrested were part of a group engaged in an organized protest on the 
corner of Washington and Spring streets. The protesters were from the Maine 
Veterans for Peace and the Global Network Against Weapon and Nuclear Power in 
Space. They were protesting the christening of the warship at BIW. 

According to a Bath Police Department press release, “During the organized 
protest, the group went onto Washington Street and blocked pedestrian and 
vehicular traffic in front of BIW’s South Gate. The protesters were given a 
lawful order to leave the roadway but they remained. They were told that if they 
remained they would be arrested. The group sat down in the roadway and remained 
there until they were taken into custody one at a time by Bath police officers 
as well as Sagadahoc County Sheriff ’s deputies."

The dozen were transported to Bath Police Department, booked and released on 
personal recognizance bail. They were issued an Aug. 2 West Bath District Court 
date where they are scheduled to appear at 1 p.m.

The individuals were cooperative during booking, according to police.

Arrested were: Richard Lethem, 83, of Bath; Dudley Hendrick, 74, of Deer 
Isle; Bruce Gagnon, 64, of Bath; Russell Wray, 61, of Hancock; Tarak Kauff, 74, 
of Woodstock, New York; Joan Peck, 69, of Brunswick; George Ostensen, 61, of 
Hope; Jason Rawn, 42, of Lincolnville; Cynthia Howard, 69, of Biddeford; 
Constance Jenkins, 68, of Orono; John Morris, 79, of New Glaucester, and John 
Peck, 75, of Brunswick.

“Zumwalt-12 after being released by police in Bath, Maine today,” one photo 
caption states. “Arrested for blocking the road in front of Bath Iron Works 
‘christening’ of the new $4 billion Zumwalt ‘stealth’ destroyer.”

It further states, “We told the media that we wanted to ‘interrupt the 
celebration of endless war and corporate profit’ going on inside the event. All 
the Maine big wig elected officials were there — Republican and Democrat alike — 
all on their knees begging for more $$$$ to build more damn warships while the 
rest of the nation is put on life support.

“We continue to call for the conversion of BIW to build rail, solar, wind and 
tidal power systems so the future generations can have a life,” the blog 
continues. “We need more help projecting this demand into the public 
consciousness.”
