From Socialist Alternative-Are You With Me?-Build The Resistance

Sister and brothers,

Trump and the billionaires are determined to wage an unrelenting war on the rights of women, immigrants, Muslims, working people, unions, and the environment.

Seattle is a model for how we can fight these remorseless attacks by big business and the billionaire class. After the election of Kshama Sawant, Seattle was the first major city to to address poverty wages by passing $15/hr, and most recently, divested from Wells Fargo for its funding of DAPL and discriminatory banking practices.

Just imagine what we could do if we had more unapologetic fighters in cities across the country!  We could really strike a blow against corporate control of society. That’s why I’m proud to announce that another Socialist Alternative candidate, Ginger Jentzen, is running for Minneapolis City Council this year.

Ginger worked for years as a tipped restaurant worker, and a home health care worker. Her activist experience has placed her on the front lines against foreclosures, with #BlackLivesMatter Minnesota, and most recently as the leader of 15 Now Minnesota, which is on the verge of winning a historic victory for tens of thousands of low-wage workers in Minneapolis.

But the area in Minneapolis where she is running is the epicenter of gentrification, and big developers are prepared to spend whatever it takes to ensure Ginger’s demands for affordable housing remain far from City Hall. To give a sense of what our movement is up against, in the last election, over $100,000 from real-estate interests poured into the race to ensure the developer friendly candidate won, with dozens of maxed out donations from big time developers.

I’m prepared to pledge the maximum for an individual individual - $600- to Ginger’s campaign, to cancel out a donation from a big developer.

Can you help cancel out another maximum donation from a big developer?
If 30 people donated just $20 today, we would cancel out a developer's donation. Can we count on you for $20? (of course you can always give more)

Like Seattle, Minneapolis is rapidly changing at the expense of working people. There is new development, but it’s unaffordable for most, especially women and people of color.. Rents and property taxes are on the rise once more.. There are vast economic and racial inequalities, and the Democratic Party leadership that runs City Hall refuses to take substantial action.

With Trump and the billionaires unleashing a storm of attacks on working people and the environment now more than ever we need more unapologetic fighters rooted in the social movements that actually bring down entrenched injustices. Ginger has that experience. She is refusing to take money from big business and developers, and pledges to take the average wage of a worker in her Ward.

Today Trump and the Army Corp of Engineers announced they will approve the Dakota Access pipeline in just one day’s time.  It’s clear we must stand up now and fight Trump and the Billionaire Class.  Our lives and those of future generations depend on it.  Are you with us?

In solidarity,

Kshama Sawant, Socialist Alternative Seattle City Councilmember
