From Those Who Served And Write- Here's to our next 10 years!

“Warrior Writers saved my life. Coming home, I felt disconnected and invisible. War doesn’t leave you—it haunts you, so this program eases the burden.” – Sarah Mess, mother of two who served with a U.S. Army field hospital in the war in Somalia in 1993.

Dear friends,
As 2017 comes to a close, Warrior Writers is proud of what we’ve accomplished:
  • We celebrated our 10th anniversary year with veteran readings and workshops in DC, Colorado, Durham, Boston, and NJ plus our beautiful anniversary bash in Philadelphia.
  • We started a Portland chapter and have the Chicago chapter poised to make a comeback!
  • And we are about to publish our Warrior Writers guide – a DIY tool that puts the power of our methodology in the hands of any veteran or group who wants to do this work.
Would you make a generous year-end gift to support our work in 2018? Consider becoming a monthly sustainer.
We have a small team – two part-time staff members and a budget under $100K per year. We are able to do so much, with so little – thanks to your generous support.
A major highlight of our work this year was our collaboration on Radio Silence with Mural Arts Philadelphia. The project culminated in a deeply inspiring outdoor public performance at Independence Hall, connecting the stories of our veterans with those of Iraqi refugees now living in the city. The process created powerful connections between our veterans and Iraqis, and friendships were born. We must continue building with this wonderful community, but the project funding ran out!
Two of our Iraqi friends, Nashwa and Siham, are pictured above with DC chapter leader Val and Founder/Director Lovella. Your gift before December 31st will help us to deepen these relationships.
With your support, we have big plans for 2018, including:
  • Starting a chapter in New Orleans
  • Writing workshops with veterans, Iraqis, and other refugees in Denver
  • A big show in the Bay area
But we are entering the new year knowing that a couple of long-standing sources of our revenue have been cut. The impact of these cuts is that we won't be able to do as many workshops with our active duty service members from Walter Reed. We are accountable to a community of veterans and service members who rely on our programming to help keep them grounded, and we can't do this without you.
Will you help with a donation of $25, $50, $100 or more by December 31st? Also, if you know someone else looking to give, please point them in our direction, or purchase one of our books as a gift!
We are honored that you trust us. By making a donation to Warrior Writers, you can rest assured that our committed, tireless staff and volunteers will maximize the reach of your generosity.
With deep gratitude and hope,
Lovella Calica
Founding Director
P.S. Any donation amount helps our small staff achieve big goals. Consider becoming a recurring donor with a monthly donation of $5, $10, $25 or more. Thank you for your support.
