ACTIVISTS SUCCESSFULLY BLOCK DOWNTOWN SEATTLE ICE OFFICE IN PEACEFUL CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE! We need an escalation of peaceful civil disobedience that can shut down ICE across the country, with political representatives like Kshama Sawant who are willing to risk arrest to build and broadcast the movement’s demands. Yesterday’s action, and especially the shutdown of the Portland ICE office, though far from the scale of what will be necessary, point the way forward and are victories for our movement.
UW STUDENT WORKERS’ CONTRACT RATIFIED, BUT FIGHT FOR EQUITY ON CAMPUS FAR FROM OVER Following an intense contract battle – including the largest strike action in University of Washington history – the Academic Student Employees (ASEs) of UAW Local 4121 ratified a new contract on June 3. Because of bold action and the willingness to fight, ASEs won affordable mental health coverage, trans-inclusive health care, and union-administered sexual harassment prevention training.
ISRAEL: TENS OF THOUSANDS PROTEST AND STRIKE FOR LGBTQ RIGHTS This was one of the most important demonstrations organized in Israel in recent years to protest the Netanyahu coalition government’s opposition to full equality for LGBTQ people. The mass Equality Demonstration that marked a day of unprecedented pro-LGBTQ rights protest strikes shook the country with demonstrations in 17 cities and roadblocks.
The timing could not be better for this movie as there is currently a resurgence in interest in socialist ideas. We are given a close look at the many stages of Debs, and his political development; from a Democratic craft union leader to a union fighter who built the first mass industrial labor union to a five-time Socialist Party presidential candidate who was jailed multiple times for his beliefs, there are lessons to be learned throughout his life.
