The Veterans History Project (VHP)

VFP Smedley<vfpsmedley@gmail.com>

The Veterans History Project (VHP) is a project within the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress. VHP was mandated by unanimous legislation in 2000 to engage the general public in preserving the first person narratives of the veterans in their lives and their communities. There are several ways to contribute to our archive, including recording oral histories via video or audio media, as well as through compilations of original materials such as photographs, letters, memoirs and diaries. These collections of first-hand accounts are archived in the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress for use by researchers and to serve as an inspiration for generations to come.

VHP relies on volunteers throughout the nation to collect veterans’ stories on behalf of the Library of Congress. I would encourage you to consider collecting the story of the veteran in your life. This short (15 mins.) video explains the process: http://www.loc.gov/vets/companion-video.html.

All the information about the VHP is on our website, particularly the How to Participate section: http://www.loc.gov/vets/kit.html. There you’ll find a link to the required forms and instructions for participating. We also have a Field Kit (which contains instructions for participation, forms, etc.) and a brochure available for download.

The key points are:
- Any veteran who served in the US military, in any capacity, is eligible to participate. VHP accepts the stories of veterans as defined by the Department of Veterans Affairs: “A person who served in the active military service and who was discharged or released under conditions other than dishonorable.”
- All interview recordings must be at least 30 minutes in length, and must be with individual veterans (we cannot accept interviews with groups of veterans).
- All submissions must be accompanied by a Biographical Data Form, a Veteran’s Release Form, and an Interviewer’s Release Form (if applicable).
- The Project is on-going, so there’s no deadline to participate. All submissions that meet our basic requirements are added to the VHP collection.
