Dear Friends,
“Ban the bomb!”— I have a vivid teenage memory of chanting this slogan as I marched behind the inimitable Linus Pauling in a Los Angeles peace demonstration circa 1960. Alas, the arms race only escalated, haunting our days and nights with palpable fears of apocalypse. Fortunately, if perhaps improbably, the world survived. With the Cold War’s waning, the nightmares receded, yet the nuclear sword of Damocles still hangs over us.

David Krieger’s essay "Nuclear Abolition: The Road from Armageddon to Transformation" first sets the historical context, then forcefully argues the case for “nuclear zero.” A prominent peace activist and writer, Krieger calls for a revitalized movement for nuclear disarmament, marching arm-in-arm with environmental and justice movements.

In a lively Roundtable, discussants exchange perspectives on the issues raised by Krieger’s essay, and the author responds.

Joanna Macy has touched and inspired generations with her unique fusion of systems philosophy, individual transcendence, and eco-social advocacy. In an interview, “Serving the Earth, Serving One Another,” she shares her personal journey and ideas about finding individual and collective strength in confronting our troubling moment.

Krieger and Macy help us imagine a path to a peaceful Earthland.

Carry it on,
