Al,
On Friday we got big news. In response to pressure from around the nation and inside their own ranks, the Democratic National Committee (DNC) scheduled a vote on a #ClimateDebate for August.
On August 23rd, at the Democratic Party National Meeting in San Francisco, representatives from around the country will vote on a resolution calling for the Democratic Party to either host a climate debate or stop preventing any independent climate debates. That means we have 7 weeks to kick our #ClimateDebate campaign into high gear and push the Democratic leadership to start treating climate change like the emergency it is.
Tom Perez and the Democratic leadership win when they can play insider politics within their elite ranks -- pulling strings and offering concessions to quell dissent. That works in their leadership meetings, but when hundreds of local party representatives come together, they can't control everyone.
That’s why this August's meeting is our best opportunity to push the Democratic Party to host a climate debate. And it’s probably our last. If we don’t get a win here, it will be too late in the campaign to schedule a climate debate.
We have 7 weeks to build a critical mass of support ahead of this vote. This requires that we mobilize in every corner of the country to turn up the heat on local and state party officials to back a climate debate. Most importantly, along the way, we’ll keep growing the movement and building on the broad majority support for a climate debate among the public.
Let’s do this.
