After
President-elect Hassan Roulani, in his first press
conference since being elected, emphasized his interest in fashioning a new
paradigm for relations with the West. "The new government feels that a new
opportunity for interacting with the world has been created by the people by
their votes," affirmed Rouhani.Iran's presidential election it has become clear that we are on the cusp of an historic opportunity to move toward a peaceful resolution of tensions with Iran. Hassan Rouhani, a cleric who had served as Iran's principal nuclear negotiator at an earlier stage in negotiations, was elected with over 50% of the vote in a large field of candidates.. The newly elected president has been characterized as "fair" by European negotiators who worked with him to find a solution to the nuclear issue. Ask your Representative, Senator Warren, and Senator-Elect Markey to Sign the Price-Dent Letter!Last week, Reps. David Price (D-NC) and Charlie Dent (R-PA) began circulating a bi-partisan sign-on letter to President Obama calling for him to seize the moment created by the Iranian people who voted for moderation and reconciliation over radicalism and confrontation. This letter is a big deal, particularly coming from the branch of government that has too often been on the hawkish side of the Iran policy debate. Now, Members of Congress will urge President Obama to pursue new negotiations with Iran, refrain from any provocative action that could jeopardize this opening, and ensure sanctions can be eased at the negotiating table. The effort is even more noteworthy because it is being led by a bipartisan pair of Congressmen. Now, we need our Massachusetts Delegation to weigh in to add its strong voice by asking our Representatives to sign the Price-Dent letter. Rep. Jim McGovern has already done so -- let's ask the rest of our delegation to join him! The deadline has been extended to Wednesday, July 17 to get as many signatures on this Congressional letter as possible. Write and call your Congressperson today. Click here to ask him or her to sign on to the Price-Dent Letter for fresh negotiations with Iran's new President. Then call his or her congressional DC office.

This space is dedicated to the proposition that we need to know the history of the struggles on the left and of earlier progressive movements here and world-wide. If we can learn from the mistakes made in the past (as well as what went right) we can move forward in the future to create a more just and equitable society. We will be reviewing books, CDs, and movies we believe everyone needs to read, hear and look at as well as making commentary from time to time. Greg Green, site manager
