Update 10/3/13: “Who is Chelsea Manning?” wins best project award at NYC art festival
The art project “Who’s Chelsea Manning” created by Kyle Goen won the best project award at the DUMBO arts festival in NYC last weekend. Created from hundreds of small flags, the art piece changed perspective depending on how close the viewer stood. From far away, the image of Chelsea Manning was clear, but from close up it would disappear. Buzzfeed author Lily Hiott-Millis comments that the piece mirrors the scale of the trial in that it “only comes together as a clear portrait when you stand far enough away to take in the entire piece at once.” Artist Kyle Koen hopes the piece will offer some comfort and support to Manning:
“I really hope that a piece this big, when it’s up — just the beauty of the piece alone, I’m hoping that Chelsea will see it, or know word of it, and that will just be some light and some comfort in her darkness, you know?”Pvt. Manning’s lawyer David Coombs responded to the art award via Twitter shortly after the announcement, stating that his office will make sure that Pvt. Chelsea Manning receives a copy of the story!
