From Vetersns for Peace-Take Action Against U.S. Bases in Okinawa!

Between now and November 8th, Veterans For Peace has a unique opportunity to highlight that #PeaceIsPossible.  We can and MUST use every venue to share our experiences and help people understand that war is not the answer.

Every week, from now until the election, Veterans For Peace will release a list of questions for the presidential candidates, and we want YOUR help
Our focus this week: Okinawa and U.S. Military Bases
  • The Okinawan people have been resisting  new US base construction for decades & have demanded reductions.  How do you propose to resolve the impasse between 70 to 80 % of the local Okinawa population that is opposed to current military base construction, specifically at Henoko in Oura Bay and the helipads being built in Takae, with Japanʻs central government & US federal policies that insists on going ahead with construction despite the people and Okinawa Governor’s strong objection?

  • The USA differs from the rest of the nations of the world, in that it possesses over 800 permanent US military bases within other nationʻs borders, such as in Okinawa where the majority do not want them there.  How do you propose reducing these overseas military occupations to be more aligned with the democratic aspirations of most nations that do not have such military policies?

  • The region that is now known as Okinawa prefecture is in the currently volatile region of the South China Sea, and prior to Okinawaʻs illegal overthrow by Imperial Japan, the seas/land of the sovereign Ryukyu Kingdom had demilitarized to secure peace among its neighbors.  Explain using evidence why militarizing the region will provide longer-term human security?

  • Please explain/defend how the permanent stationing of a foreign military in Okinawa has helped in its defense, including deterrence of missile testing over Japan by North Korea and Chinese military presence in the South China Seas, and has not been instead a source of provocation?
  • Submit your own question to the candidates!
