Those of who
frequented Johnny D’s in Somerville’s Davis Square section will miss the quirky
vibes of the place from its inception as an outlier of country in the urban
oasis back in the day when that genre had its minute in the Boston area before
fading from more hubris than the legendary country singer Sleepy La Beef could shake a stick
at. Many jazz aficionados got juiced up on jazz there during the brunches. Many more
blues aficionados got strung out with the likes of Luther “Guitar Junior” Johnson
to Taj Mahal to James Montgomery (a long-time hanger-outer at the establishment).
More importantly all the later genre of new music which drew in the younger crowds (and
did not draw me and mine) got their big first starts, or first big showcases, there.
Adieu Johnny D’s.
