Legendary Marvel Comic Book Illustrator And Super-Hero Creator Stan Lee Passes At 95

Legendary Marvel Comic Book Illustrator And Super-Hero Creator Stan Lee Passes At 95

By Seth Garth

Greg Green has asked me to make comment on the passing of legendary Marvel Comic illustrator and innovative super-hero creator (think Hulk, Captain America, Black Panther) Stan Lee at 95. He said he was in a quandary about asking anybody to do the piece since he had been the one who in 2017 had the writers here, young and old alike, do film reviews of Marvel and DC Comic characters as they hit the screen. This as part of what I think was asserting his authority when he took over the day to day operations of the publication as site manager after a bloody internal battle pitting young against old which resulted in the previous manager being purged and sent into exile. This frankly hare-brained scheme was Greg’s notion of “broadening our horizons,” or some such thing in order to reach a younger demographic. Both young and old writers rebelled against this dictate and more importantly the reader base which is heavily composed of baby-boomers did as well. If Greg, and

I won’t go on and go about his grievous error since we have bloodied the pages on this subject already, has thought to ask any writer, young or old, about what drives the youngsters to the cinema to see these gaggles of super-heroes doing their action a minute stuff against bad guys he would have known that they do not read so-called high brow film reviews in baby-boomer oriented publications. Don’t read at all or not much when the Internet will instantly spoon-feed them whatever they need to know. But enough.

I don’t know much about Stan Lee except as he became a more known figure in the comic book world it was clear he was a max daddy innovator, a guy who could create super-heroes however misshapen and loaded with super-human powers had some human qualities that an average kid or older aficionado could hang onto. And maybe that is his legacy, the kindness and the thought behind his creations which were reflected more fully I think in the comic books rather than the films with the action a minute scenarios which seemed too implausible to dwell on. If the doing no harm in the real world and providing some easy leisure time reading as I did for me as a kid despite not knowing he created many of the characters s then that says enough. RIP, Stan Lee, RIP.

From The Living Archives Of Boston Veterans For Peace-They Ain't Your Grandfather's Veterans

From The Living Archives Of Boston Veterans For Peace-They Ain't Your Grandfather's Veterans

[Ralph Morris who has lived in Troy, New York most of his life, been raised there and raised his own family there, went to war, the bloody, horrendous Vietnam War which he has made plain many times he will never live down, never get over what he did, what he saw others do, and most importantly for the long haul, what his evil government did with no remorse to people in that benighted country with whom he had no quarrel never was much for organizations, joining organizations when he was young until he came up a group formed in the fire of the Vietnam War protests -Vietnam Veteran Against the War (VVAW) which he joined after watching a contingent of them pass by in silent march protesting the war in downtown Albany one fall afternoon. Somebody in that contingent with a microphone called out to any veterans observing the march who had had enough of war, had felt like that did to “fall in” (an old army term well if bitterly remembered). He did and has never looked back although for the past many years his affiliation has been with a subsequent anti-war veterans’ group Veterans for Peace.

Sam Eaton, who has lived in Carver, Massachusetts, most of his life, been raised there and raised his own family there, and did not go to war. Did not go for the simple reason that due to a severe childhood accident which left him limping severely thereafter he was declared no fit for military duty, 4-F the term the local draft board used. He too had not been much for organizations, joining organizations when he was young. That is until his best friend from high school, Jeff Mullins, died in hell-hole Vietnam and before he had died asked Sam that if anything happened to him to let the world that he had done things, had seen others do things, and most importantly for the long haul, what his evil government did with no remorse to people in that benighted country with whom he had no quarrel. As part of honoring Jeff’s request after Sam found out about his death he was like a whirling dervish joining one anti-war action after another, joining one ad hoc group, each more radical than the previous one as the war until the fateful day when he met Ralph down in Washington, D.C.

That was when both in their respective collectives, Ralph in VVAW and Sam in Cambridge Red Front, were collectively attempting one last desperate effort to end the war by closing down the government if it would not shut down the war. All they got for their efforts were tear gas, police batons, and arrest bracelets and a trip to the bastinado which was the floor of Robert F. Kennedy stadium which is where they would meet after Sam noticed Ralph’s VVAW pin and told him about Jeff and his request. That experience would form a lasting friendship including several years ago Sam joining Ralph’s Veterans for Peace as a supporter, an active supporter still trying to honor his long gone friend’s request and memory.

No one least of all either of them would claim they were organizing geniuses, far from it but over the years they participated, maybe even helped organize many anti-war events. One day their friend, Josh Breslin, who writes a by-line at this publication, and who is also a veteran asked them to send some of events they had participated in here to form a sort of living archives of the few remaining activist grouping in this country, in America who are still waging the struggle for peace. So periodically, since we are something of a clearing house and historic memory for leftist activities, we will put their archival experiences into our archives.

Report Back On Honk! Parade And Octoberfest In Harvard Square-Sunday October 7th -Thanks To Smedley Honk! Marchers and Octoberfest Booth Volunteers

Special thanks to Dan H. and Jain R-H for bringing materials, etc. over from the wilds of Quincy to the Wild West of Harvard Square

Kudos to the Smedleys and supporters, carrying flags furling in the breeze, who marched to the music of our allies in the Leftist Marching Band in the Honk! Parade on Sunday October 7th starting in Davis Square, Somerville, and wending (nice word, right) its way to Harvard Square, that is in the high rent district of Cambridge. We got, as usual in this “choir” parade, a good response along the way and a great response, again as always, in Harvard Square propah. The parade stepped off at noon or a little after and we got applause from the start. A special feature this year was a banner brought by leading Smedley Pat Scanlon from our “banner-maker” in North Andover (kudos to him)-captioned with our big Armistice Day push to get one and all to ring the bells at 11 on November 11th. We also passed out VFP informational leaflets and our Armistice Day parade and program announcement. (We will be presenting more info on that event as we get closer to the day.)

Octoberfest in Harvard Square, still in the high rent district of Cambridge-about 10 AM to 5 PM

Dan Higgins and Jain R-H brought our canopy and other materials sometime before 10 AM (8-10 is when vehicles were allowed to unload, etc.) and he and others helped set the booth up with literature and our new expanded inventory of clothing. As we go to press, oops, to cyberspace, I have no figures on the day’s take, how much moola we made, but we had steady business and conversations all afternoon. (I will amend this for the Minutes to reflect our “take,” how much moola we made, on the day minus the $135 graft to get the booth.)

[We made $254,00 on the day-Scribe]

The divine Jain Rudivich (maybe sic)-Higgins staffed the booth early. Irrepressible Jon Niles committed himself to spending time at the booth as did Pat Scanlon-Doug Stuart Kebartas and John Robinson -and also helped after marching from the wilds of Somerville. At a little 5 PM before as the rains which seemed predestined to plague this event several people helped pack up after a long day. Thanks to all marchers and booth volunteers who made our work easier by their presence.

BU News Armistice Day reporting - NOT YOUR AVERAGE GLOBE REPORTING!

This young BU student, from China, writing this piece as an assignment for a journalism course, has more gleaned from us, and concisely expressed our mission, than I ever thought possible.  It is amazing.

Why can't we, in Boston, get reporters like this?? (Or, editors who direct their reporters to stories like this, The 100th Anniversary of Armistice Day!    Seems clear who wants endless war...who's complicit.

It’s your choice.

Most likely you'll pay less taxes in a few months if you make a tax-deductible donation now to the RootsAction Education Fund.

More than half of the U.S. government’s discretionary spending is military-related. If you think there’s something wrong with such priorities, we certainly agree.

If you contribute now with a tax-deductible donation, you’ll be helping the RootsAction Education Fund to gear up our efforts -- working for peaceful resolution of conflicts instead endless wars.

And we’re committed to freedom of information that can make possible the informed consent of the governed instead of media manipulation that’s so routine.

That’s why the RootsAction Education Fund actively supports the rights of whistleblowers, journalists, researchers and activists who insist on speaking truth to -- and about --  power.

We challenge the kind of power that spends astronomical amounts of tax money on the military while so many people are suffering from lack of health care, education, housing, nutrition and other human rights.

We can’t keep doing the work of the RootsAction Education Fund without support from people who care. And frankly, after focusing on the content of our work all year, our organization is just about out of money. That’s why we’re sending this email, asking for your tax-deductible donation so we can continue this work and make it stronger.

Thank you!

With best wishes,

Last Call-We Are Marching To…End The Endless Wars- Be There At Noon Sunday November 11th For Our Annual Peace Parade And Program-We Will Have Vehicle In Parade For Those Who Need To Ride So Come On Out

We Will Have Vehicle In The Parade For Those Who Need To Ride

Be there, be aware. We are marching this 100th Anniversary of the Armistice to finish the task of ending the endless wars which have gone on since that close of WWI, the war that was supposed to end all wars.

We will, as we have in the past, form up at the corner of Beacon Street and Charles Street at noon to be ready to step off after the “official” parade at 1 PM as it heads to the finish line at City Hall Plaza

We will, as we have also done in the past, have our Armistice Day program, this year mercifully shorter, at Sam Adams Park in Fanueil Hall Marketplace complete with speakers, bands and poets starting about 2 PM.

If none of this getting sore feet and listening to endless speakers drone on does not get you motivated, then if you are a veteran or would just like to break bread with veterans the proprietors of nearby Durgin Park provide a nice meal to all veterans that day after completion of our program.

Tulsi Gabbard

Jeanne,
I’m writing with an urgent request.
Late last night, House Republicans on the Rules Committee voted to block our bill, HConRes 138, from coming to the House floor for a vote - a bill that would end U.S. support for Saudi Arabia’s genocidal war in Yemen, which has resulted in the worst humanitarian crisis in generations, leaving tens of thousands of Yemeni civilians dead, and millions more sick and starving.
This is the Saudi Arabia that House Republicans seek to appease:
  • The Saudi Arabia that viciously murdered reporter Jamal Khashoggi
  • The Saudi Arabia that is the #1 exporter of extremist Wahhabi Salafi ideology that is fueling terrorist troops like ISIS and al-Qaeda around the world
  • The Saudi Arabia that’s directly and indirectly financing and supporting terrorist groups like Al Qaeda in Syria and other countries
  • The Saudi Arabia that’s waging a genocidal war in Yemen, creating what the UN has called the worst humanitarian crisis in a generation
The evidence is overwhelming: Saudi Arabia is not our ally.
With aloha,
Tulsi

Rep. Tulsi Gabbard Calls on Congress to End U.S. Military Support of Saudi Arabia’s Genocidal War in Yemen

Rep. Tulsi Gabbard Calls on Congress to End U.S. Military Support of Saudi Arabia’s Genocidal War in Yemen

Washington, DC—Following a move by House Republicans to block a vote on bipartisan resolution (H. Con Res. 138), legislation that would have ended U.S. military support for Saudi Arabia's genocidal war in Yemen, Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (HI-02) today spoke on the House floor, urging Members of Congress to vote against the Republican rule and bring H. Con. Res. 138 to the floor for a vote.

Rep. Tulsi Gabbard is also co-leading a bipartisan letter urging Members of Congress to vote later today against this rule that prevents H. Con. Res. 138 from coming to the House floor for a vote.

Rep. Tulsi Gabbard said:

“Last night, House Republicans on the Rules Committee voted to undermine our democracy by blocking the American people and Members of Congress from having a debate and the ability to vote on a bill that would end U.S. support for Saudi Arabia’s genocidal war in Yemen – a war that has created the world’s worst humanitarian disaster in generations, leaving 22 million people in dire need of humanitarian aid, tens of thousands of civilians killed, and many more vulnerable to mass starvation, famine, and cholera.

“Don’t be fooled: If Congress and this Administration truly were concerned about the plight of the Yemeni people and peace, all U.S. support for Saudi Arabia’s atrocities would end now. Instead, last night on the Rules Committee, Republicans voted to shut down debate and prevent a vote that would end U.S. support for Saudi Arabia in Yemen.

"Now, later today, Congress has the opportunity to do the right thing. We are faced with a choice. I urge my colleagues to VOTE NO on H.Res.1142 so that Congress can fill our constitutional role, debate, and vote on this critical issue. It is long overdue that we end U.S. complicity in Saudi Arabia’s atrocities. We must end all U.S. support for Saudi Arabia’s genocidal war in Yemen now.”

Background:
Rep. Tulsi Gabbard is a leading voice for peace in Congress, advocating against counterproductive, regime-change wars. She has called for ending support for Saudi Arabia, pushed for additional oversight on acquisition and cross-service agreements (Section 1271 of the FY19 NDAA), supported H. Con. Res. 81, a bipartisan resolution that sought to stop U.S. military participation in Saudi Arabia's war against the Houthis in Yemen, bipartisan resolution (H. Con Res. 138) to stop U.S. military support for Saudi Arabia's genocidal war in Yemen, bipartisan legislation (H.R. 7082) to immediately stop all military sales and aid to the government of Saudi Arabia, and more.

Reps. Tulsi Gabbard and Walter Jones also introduced H.Res 922, which would reclaim Congress’s constitutional right to declare war by:
  • Defining presidential wars not declared by Congress under Article I, section 8, clause 11 (Declare War Clause) as impeachable “high crimes and misdemeanors”
  • Prohibiting the President from perpetuating ongoing wars or supplying war materials, military troops, trainers, or advisers, military intelligence, financial support or their equivalent in association, cooperation, assistance, or common cause without first receiving congressional authorization

Smith aims to scrap Trump’s nuclear weapons policy

By: Joe Gould

Rep. Adam Smith, D-Wash., is set to become the next chairman of the
House Armed Services Committee. (Cliff Owen/AP)

WASHINGTON — Rep. Adam Smith — set to become the next chairman of the
House Armed Services Committee in the new Congress — and other
Democratic lawmakers said Wednesday they hope to use their party’s
takeover of the House to check the Trump administration’s expansive
policies toward nuclear weapons.

Speaking at an event sponsored by the Ploughshares Fund, an
anti-nuclear weapons group, Smith said he wants to see a redo of the
Trump administration’s Nuclear Posture Review, to continue
multilateral nuclear pacts and to advance a no-first-use policy toward
nuclear weapons for the United States.

Smith also reiterated he wants a ban on a new low-yield
submarine-launched nuclear weapon, a version of the W76-1 warhead for
the Navy’s Trident II D5 ballistic missile, dubbed the W76-2. He
introduced a bill to that effect in September.

It’s a tall order. In the House, where Democrats have picked up 34 to
40 seats, Smith’s ambitious proposals are likelier to become part of
the next annual defense policy bill. However, those proposals would
have a rougher road in negotiations with the GOP-led Senate Armed
Services Committee; on the Senate floor, where GOP holds a majority;
and in the Oval Office, where President Donald Trump wields the veto
pen.

“Fundamentally what I’m hoping what we can do moving forward is reset
our policy on nuclear weapons,” said Smith, D-Wash., adding that it
would be one of his top goals as chairman in the coming Congress.

Two Democrats and senior members of the Senate Foreign Relations
Committee, Oregon Sen. Jeff Merkley and Massachusetts Sen. Ed Markey,
expressed similar sentiments at Wednesday’s event.

A ‘crisis of national security’: New report to Congress sounds alarm

America’s military superiority has “eroded to a dangerous degree,”
leaving the U.S. in crisis if faced with more than one conflict at
once, a new congressionally-mandated report concluded.

By: Aaron Mehta

Ploughshares President Joe Cirincione was upbeat a week after
Democrats won control of the House and hoped the organization could
“test out new ideas” in the new Congress to introduce into the 2020
presidential elections. Cirincione condemned the emergence of “new Dr.
Strangeloves” under the Trump administration, which has flirted with
withdrawing from the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty and the
New START Treaty.

For his part, Smith has promised to rein in nuclear spending and
favors a more modest and sensible approach to nuclear weapons, as a
credible deterrent and not as an overwhelming force designed to win a
nuclear war.

But he also hoped to temper expectations for the room full of
nonproliferation advocates. For one, he does not categorically oppose
nuclear weapons.

“We need a different president. We could pass whatever legislation we
want to pass, but executive power is enormous.” Smith said. “We need
to exercise oversight, we need to put him in check as much as we can.
But we shouldn’t kid ourselves about the reality.”

Asked the best way to negotiate to reduce nuclear weapons with a
GOP-controlled SASC, Smith said he could argue the trade-offs with
conventional weapons like ships and planes. "From a dollar standpoint,
you cannot have both,” he said.

The U.S. will need to spend $1.2 trillion over the next 30 years to
modernize and maintain its nuclear weapons, according to a 2017
Congressional Budget Office estimate.

Since then, the administration released its new Nuclear Posture
Review, which called for a continuation of sustainment and
modernization efforts within the Defense and Energy departments, while
also proposing a range of programmatic changes to the nuclear weapons
enterprise.

Among them, the administration has sought the W76-2 program, a
nuclear-armed, sea-launched cruise missile, and to sustain the B83-1
bomb beyond its planned retirement date.

Here’s when all of America’s new nuclear warhead designs will be
active — and how much they’ll cost

America will be spending a lot on nuclear weapons in the coming years.
Here's what the Trump administration will get.

By: Aaron Mehta

The Republican chairmen of the House and Senate Armed Services
committees — Rep. Mac Thornberry and Sen. Jim Inhofe, respectively —
have been supportive of the Trump administration’s direction on
nuclear weapons since the NPR was released in February.

The NPR, Thornberry said then, “assures that our deterrent will be
taken seriously by our adversaries and allies alike, while keeping the
total cost below 7 percent of what the Department of Defense spends to
protect the country.”

On Wednesday, Markey said any withdrawal from the New START Treaty
should be put to a Senate vote, as should any move to provide Saudi
Arabia with plutonium and uranium. He also pledged to “fight tooth and
nail” to defund the development and deployment of low-yield nuclear
weapons.

“There is no such thing as a zero-calorie chocolate fudge sundae,”
Markey said, “and there is no such thing as a low-yield nuclear
weapon.”

CIW’s Harvest Without Violence Mobile Exhibit travels to Haverford College for a Fair Food-filled week!

In between studying for midterms and getting out the vote last week, students at Haverford College in Pennsylvania took a pause to stand in solidarity with the women and men who harvest the food we eat. The John B. Hurford ‘60 Center for the Arts and Humanities, Philadelphia Arts Creative Collective (PACC) Program, Distinguished Visitors Program and Haverford Microfinance and Impact Investing Initiative (MI3) at Haverford College invited CIW’s co-founder Lucas Benitez and Ximena Pedroza of the Student/Farmworker Alliance to debut the Harvest Without Violence Mobile Exhibit at their dining center, educating over 300 students about the alarming rate of sexual harassment and assault confronted by farmworker women in the fields and about the only proven solution in agriculture to end and prevent such abuses: the award-winning Fair Food Program. While touring the exhibit’s legal documents, farmworker testimonies and extensive research, scores of students learned about the Campaign for Fair Food and pledged to boycott Wendy’s until the fast-food chain joins the rest of the industry in protecting farmworkers’ rights.

In addition to the guided tours, the Immokalee team led a series of classroom workshops on the Fair Food Nation’s impressive organizing track record on Thursday, November 8, as well as a keynote speech titled “Holding Goliath Accountable”. Lucas drew from the biblical story of David and Goliath, painting a picture of how farmworkers – as determined and steadfast as David himself – have managed to hold Goliath accountable...
