Dr. Lisa Sowle Cahill, Professor of theology at Boston College, was one of the leaders of last April’s Vatican 3-day international symposium on Nonviolence and Just Peace. The symposium recommended that the Catholic Church drop its teaching of “Just War Theory” and endorse a policy of nonviolence with a teaching from the pope. In response, Pope Francis has just issued a statement for January 1, the World Day of Peace in the Catholic Church, calling for all to embrace a policy of “active nonviolence” and no more war.

Dr. Cahill will describe the Vatican symposium and speak on the future of nonviolence in the Catholic Church and the world. After her presentation there will be discussion with the audience. This meeting will be at 3pm February 5, 2017 (it’s ok – the Super Bowl isn’t until 6:30 pm) in the lower church hall of Our Lady Help of Christians Church at 573 Washington St., Newton Corner. All are welcome. Free, but offerings to support the work of the sponsors will be graciously accepted. Park in the parking lot behind the church off of Adams St. Use the adjacent church entrance.

Victory against Dakota Access Pipeline! -Build The Resistance

Sisters and brothers,

#DefundDAPL Victory!

Yesterday, our movement struck a $3 billion blow against Wells Fargo, for being a major investor in the Dakota Access Pipeline and the private prison industry, and for a long record of corrupt, discriminatory banking practices.

The ordinance introduced by indigenous activists and myself was passed unanimously in the Seattle City Council Finance Committee to divest Seattle from doing business with Wells Fargo. The full, final Council vote is on February 6th - only 5 days, so we need to keep up the pressure! (See my full statement here)

First and foremost, I want to thank the Standing Rock Sioux, and all who joined with them on the ground in North Dakota to oppose the pipeline and stand up courageously against the brutal repression of police and private contractors. I want to also thank the #NoDAPL Seattle movement for their leadership – Indigenous activists, 350 Seattle and many others - and Shaun King and the Injustice Boycott movement for giving our local movement an extra boost, and helping to spread the idea nationally.

We need to fight the pipeline on many fronts. In declaring war on Wells Fargo and other major investors behind the pipeline, by hitting them where it hurts - their profits - and bringing #DefundDAPL to other cities and states, we can powerfully strengthen the resistance.

Our task could not be more urgent. Just yesterday, the Army Corps of Engineers was ordered to grant the Dakota Access Pipeline the easement to proceed. And just last night the militarized police cleared an encampment, arrested 75 protesters and terrorized many more.

Please support the movement to de-fund the Dakota Access Pipeline and contribute $20, $50, or $100.

Trump’s executive order to restart building the pipelines and stacking his cabinet full of ultra-conservative, climate change denying billionaires and Big Oil representatives makes it absolutely clear they intend to wage a relentless war on the environment.

By organizing, mobilizing and rallying, by sitting-in and marching, by filling City Hall and relentlessly contacting Councilmembers, we struck a significant blow to corporate power. But it’s going to take sustained movement building, mass non violent civil disobedience, and strike actions to fight Trump, the banks, and the billionaires’ agenda of environmental destruction and bigotry.

The next step in the #DefundDAPL movement is to help build for the largest protest against Wells Fargo on February 11th in Seattle. Join the rally, share the event page, or organize one in your city and let us know and we’ll help spread the word! All movements need resources to keep moving. Please remember to chip in $20, $50, or $100 today.
