BOOK REVIEW

A Moveable Feast, Ernest Hemingway, Vintage-New Edition, New York, 2000

This book, published after the death by suicide of Ernest Hemingway in 1961, but written in 1960 is a little gold mine of insights about the personalities and places that made Paris in the 1920's the home of the post World War I "lost generation". Hemingway notes that these memoirs can be treated as fiction but that one can still gain some insight even through approached through that lens. Certainly the writing is as sparse and well turned as any of his short stories, including the characteristic last sentence or two of each section structured to sharply give the point he was trying to get across in the story.

Of course Hemingway was young , newly married, and fairly poor in this Paris but apparently his reputation was such that all the great American and British expatriates crossed his path (or he theirs). Gertrude Stein (and Alice B.) get a nod. As does Ford Maddox Ford, T.S. Eliot, James Joyce, Ezra Pound and a smaller group of secondary writers and poets. Hell, I believe after this exposition that you had to have been in Paris at that time if you wanted to fertilize your work.

A special note should be taken of the sections dealing with his relationship with Scott Fitzgerald. From Hemingway's perspective Fitzgerald was a very difficult man but one whom he tried to befriend. And of course there, as always, was the Zelda problem. If you want to understand the inner strain of Fitzgerald's Tender is The Night read Hemingway's tidbits. At some level Hemingway was trying to `save' Fitzgerald as a writer but as we know that was not to be. Read here and then go out and read other books on the "lost generation". Some of it will make more sense then.

When Radio Ruled The Waves-Woody Allen's "Radio Days" (1987)-A Film Review

When Radio Ruled The Waves-Woody Allen's "Radio Days" (1987)-A Film Review

DVD REVIEW

Radio Days, Directed by Woody Allen, 1987

I am a first generation child of the television age, although in recent years I have spent more time kicking and screaming about that fact than watching the damn thing. Nevertheless I can appreciate Director (and narrator) Woody Allen’s valentine to the radio days of his youth. I am just old enough, although about a half generation behind Allen, to remember the strains of songs like Paper Dolls and Autumn Leaves that he grew up with and that are nicely interspersed throughout his story as backdrop floating in the background of my own house.

I am also a child of Rock and Roll but those above-mentioned tunes were the melodies that my mother and father came of age to and the stuff of their dreams during World War II and its aftermath. The rough and tumble of my parents raising a bunch of kids might have taken the edge off it but the dreams remained. In the end it is this musical backdrop that makes Radio Days most memorable to me.

Let’s be clear- there something very different between the medium of the radio and the medium of the television. As Allen’s film poignantly points out the radio allowed for an expansion of the imagination (and of fantasy) that the increasingly harsh realities of what is portrayed on television do not allow one to get away with. There is, for example, the funny sketch here involving the ‘scare’ caused by Orson Welles narration of War of the Worlds. Today the space wanderers would have to be literally in one’s face before one accepted such a tale.

Allen’s youth, during the heart of World War II, was time when one needed to be able to dream a little. The realities of the world at that time seemingly only allowed for nightmares. My feeling is that this film touched a lot of sentimental nerves for the World War II generation (that so-called ‘greatest generation’) whether it was his Jewish families (as portrayed here) on the shores of New York’s Far Rockaway or my Irish families on the shores of North Adamsville, Massachusetts. Nice work, Woody.

Poet Derek Walcott Passes At 87

The poet Derek Walcott was a very profound influence on creating a “post-colonial” expression for both the prospects of freedom of expression in the future and the drag of the oppressive colonial mindset of the subjects being ruled over. A tough balancing but he was able to convey both strains in his work (and not just in poetry but plays and paintings as well).

War And Romance –Rosalind Russell And William Powell’s “Rendezvous” (1935)-A Film Review

War And Romance –Rosalind Russell And William Powell’s “Rendezvous” (1935)-A Film Review

DVD Review

By Sandy Salmon

[The DVD on which this review is based had been left behind by film critic emeritus Sam for me to decide whether I wanted to tackle the thing or not. His original intention had been to review it himself based on his interest in seeing how William Powell and Myra Loy fared when they weren’t combined as they were in the successful and seemingly never-ending The Thin Man series (I agree with Sam that toward the end the plotlines were getting threadbare). He had reviewed a Myra Loy vehicle, The Bachelor and the Bobby-Soxer and had given it a lukewarm reception and had intended Rendezvous for the same purpose. Although I have stated my disinterest in old time black and white film noir comedies, including romantic comedies, have stirred my interest. Hence this review.]

Rendezvous, starring William Powell, Rosalind Russell, based on the memoirs of Herbert Yardley, 1935

In a year when we are commemorating the 100th anniversary of the bloodbath of a war that was World War I it is rather ironic that I am reviewing the film under review, Rendezvous, which at one level dealt with the serious issues of espionage and code-breaking and at another level is a well-worn slapstick romantic comedy. The irony is that my intention, not having read the blurb about what the film was all about, was to see how William Powell, famous for his ground-breaking The Thin Man series, fared without his co-star in that series Myra Loy (she had been slated to star in this production but for personal reasons passed) and teamed up with new-comer Rosalind Russell. The two themes were bit jangly but William Powell basically held on with his suave comedic reputation intact.

Of course in wars all combatant nations have to worry about protection against espionage, against enemy agents foreign and domestic, jamming up well-laid plans combined with attempts to break the enemy’s means of secure communications by breaking their codes. That is the overview that the newly minted Army lieutenant Bill Gordon, the role William Powell plays, has to content with as he is handed an assignment in Washington to protect the movement of Allied troops transports against the machinations of a German spy ring bent on cadging that information in order for the U-boats to wreak havoc on the vessels. That is the serious part. The comedic, romantic comedic part is provided by the star-struck smitten Joel Carter, the role played by Rosalind Russell. So while our unsung hero Bill attempts to crack codes and thwart the spy ring’s attempt to get information for the meetup point of an impending huge troop transport movement to the continent Joel outrageously (and incongruously) sets her love sights on Bill.

You know how the romance part will end but the espionage part was a close thing since the spy ring had infiltrated the British Embassy in Washington, including a key operative who was keeping a mistress who was actually a German spy. (This mistress who killed her paramour British operative was also the butt of Joel’s wrath when she tried to get her claws into Bill to find out what he knew about the troop ship movements). Like I said William Powell held his reputation and Rosalind Russell built one but I am still scratching my head about putting a romantic comedy together with a spy thriller. Such is life.

Veterans For Peace Rejects President Trump's Military Build Up

The President plans to increase Pentagon spending by $54 billion, claiming that the U.S. military is broken and depleted. Mr. Trump recently spoke to service members aboard the new $13 billion USS Gerald R. Ford aircraft carrier reiterating his call for more spending. Ironically the carrier is a real-life example of why more spending is not needed. U.S. military capabilities far outstrip all other nations. The carrier is an addition to a navy that  was already unmatched by all others. With ten carriers, the U.S. has more than all other nations combined and the carriers are larger, providing more deck space per carrier than other nations. The U.S. Navy has thousands of aircraft, making it the second largest air force in the world behind the U.S. Air Force. The U.S. already spends almost three times what any other country spends on defense and more than the next nine countries combined.
U.S. global policy of endless war and filling the coffers of an already bloated military budget has merged into a global response of violence. We need a global response that meets human needs and aspirations. Militarization is not the foundation on which to build peace. U.S. efforts have proven that war is the breeding ground for more violence and hatred. We need increased spending in social programs here at home, including significant resources dedicated to our veterans who are suffering devastating effects as a result of their service. We need an increase in diplomacy to end the wars. We need to dedicate resources to helping bring relief to the refugee crisis resulting from endless war.
We, as veterans, know that peace is possible, but only if resources are directed towards caring for one another, not perpetuating militarization across the globe.

VFP Endorses International Days of Action Against War and Islamophobia

Over the last 16 years since the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan in 2001, rising Islamophobia has come hand-in-hand with escalating U.S.-led wars and occupations in the Middle East and North Africa. The Trump administration is now attempting to impose an inhumane travel and refugee ban on seven Muslim countries: Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen — all targets of U.S. military attack or sanctions by the current and previous administrations.
All these point to the fact that we are moving toward another, more disastrous, catastrophe in the Middle East. We call on all peace loving people throughout the world to unite and take action during the International Days of Action (March 11-19) against U.S. intervention in Syria and throughout the Middle East, against Islamophobia, and against the refugee Travel Ban.

Matt Hoh Featured in Mondoweiss on Recent Trip to Palestine

Matt Hoh, a VFP member, recently returned from a trip to Palestine on a VFP delegation.  Upon his return, he wrote a reflection for Mondoweiss: A US veteran reflects on protesting alongside Palestinian human rights activists in Hebron
"Explosions from concussion grenades echoed off the concrete streets and stone buildings, and the white wispy fingers of tear gas followed the crowds. The gas soon ballooned into thicker clouds of chalky white. My mate on my right arm, I now know is no simple activist. Issa Amro is his name and he said “let’s go”, and we did. Through the tear gas and toward the gun line of the Israeli army and police, we went."
A Special Note from Matt:
Israel is pursuing its charges against Amro in military court. A petition has been started to remind the United Nations that Amro is a designated and recognized international human rights defender and as such, the United Nations, and its member states, have certain obligations to him.

Please take a moment to add your name to the petition and then share it with your friends and allies. Amro is a tremendous leader and he, like many other, will end the occupation of Palestine through their non-violent resistance, so long as we follow them, support them and stand with them.

50th Anniversary of Beyond Vietnam Speech

April 4, 2017 will be the 50th anniversary of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s speech Beyond Vietnam: A Time to Break Silence.  In confronting the deeply rooted racism,  militarism and materialism of the United States,  Dr. King described the United States as the greatest purveyor of violence in the world.
In honor of the 50th anniversary of the reading of Martin Luther King’s “Beyond Vietnam” speech, we are asking local VFP chapters to organize speech-reading events.

VFP Chapter 91, San Diego Reflects on My Lai Massacre

Former Peace Club members who served as interns

This Thursday, March 16th, 2017, will mark the 49th anniversary of the infamous My Lai Massacre, where American soldiers murdered over 500 unarmed Vietnamese women, children and old men.
Jack Doxey, a member of VFP San Diego Chapter 91 and Korean War combat veteran (1952-1954) has written an article providing his reflection on this important anniversary.
"Our country's attention span is short; and revisiting old wounds, as we all know, can be painful. The result is that this event has been relegated to the "dust bin" of history.  Nevertheless, I beseech our government and every American citizen to not forget, and learn from the events that unfolded 49 years ago. One obvious lesson is that war is not the answer."
