2/16/19 Swing Left Greater Boston Newsletter 2/16/19 Swing Left Greater Boston Newsletter

Dear Emmy,

Signed, Sealed and Delivered. 1,562 Letters to Voters

Swing Left Greater Boston activists hosted 13 house parties in February. Collectively, 231 party attendees wrote 1562 letters to unregistered individuals in Georgia. This certainly is an impressive start to the new political season!  Now consider this: if Swing Left Boston were able to reproduce this single weekend of activism, each month all the way to the summer of 2020, we could contact about 28,000 likely Democratic voters.

Testing 1-2-3: This Voter Registration by Mail campaign is part of a randomized controlled trial to assess the efficacy of letters written by volunteers.  We’ll soon report back on assessments of the data to determine whether this is an effective strategy (or not).
We are not just activists. We’re political strategy pioneers.

Hosting a Letter-Writing Party Couldn't Be Easier

Want to host your own Swing Left letter-writing party? Swing Left Greater Boston enables anyone who owns a computer to host a successful event. We provide end-to-end seamless support, from helping you register and promote your event through the final thank-you email to your attendees. Parties must be held before March 31st.

Only You Can Prevent Provisional Ballots

The 2018 elections were marred by massive voter roll purges, blocked voter registrations, shifting polling locations, voter ID requirements and very long lines at polling places. Would Stacey Abrams have won in a fair race? We’ll never know. But we have the opportunity now to help thousands of voters in Georgia ensure that their vote will count in 2020 by reminding them re-register after they move.
There were a large number of provisional ballots filed in Georgia in the 2018 elections. In theory, these ballots should be verified by county election officials within three days, but in practice, they are not. The day after the election, as Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams was seeking to uncover every possible vote, volunteers sprang into action to help make sure that at least some of the 27,000 provisional ballots were counted within the three-day window.

Why we ask BernieSanders.com

BernieSanders.com
<info@berniesanders.com>
To

Bernie Sanders

Sisters and Brothers -
We’ve sent a couple fundraising emails since yesterday’s big announcement, so we thought it was important to take a moment to explain why these notes are so important to our campaign.
Here’s the truth: you cannot change a corrupt system by taking its money. And you cannot expect any candidate who courts the support of drug and health insurance companies, the fossil fuel industry, Wall Street and the big banks to actually take them on.
As you know, Bernie doesn’t run around the country begging those folks for money. This campaign is reliant almost exclusively on grassroots, small-dollar donations — most of which come in response to emails like this one.
So, as you see Bernie’s poll numbers climb and our organization grow, it is the response to emails like this that make it happen. And that’s why we ask:
Remember, every donation is a declaration of support for our campaign and for the values we share. So it isn’t about how much money we raise, but how many donations we receive to fund our effort.
In solidarity,
Team Bernie

THE POWER OF PROTEST:
MIT March 4th @ 50 Years
Monday, March 4
5:30 - 7:30pm
MIT Building E15 Bartos Theater

Join us for an exploration of the power of protest at MIT. What can we
learn from previous protests and use that knowledge and energy to spur
the Institute to create ethical policies?

We will screen excerpts of November Actions: Defiance at MIT, 1969--a
powerful documentary following the protests of MIT students, faculty and
staff against the war in Vietnam and MIT's complicity in that war.

This would be followed by a moderated conversation with a panel to
provide focused discussion on three pressing issues/crises facing the
MIT community: The Ethics of AI and the #techlash movement of tech
workers; MIT's on-going relationship with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia;
and the local impact of MIT, particularly housing. We will invite
experts on each of these issues to serve as panelists.

This event will be a starting point for additional programs, lunches,
panels later on in spring 2019, focusing more specifically on these
issues. Participants at the MIT March 4 @ 50 Years event would be able
to sign up for follow-up programming.

This program will provide not only historical information but can
provide inspiration and a strong sense of "what's next". We will discuss
direct actions we can take now to help create a more equitable society
for all.

Speakers TBD. Refreshments will be served.

Co-Sponsored with the MIT Program in Art, Culture, and Technology's
February School.

Trump is TERRIFIED BernieSanders.com

To  Bernie Sanders
Friends -
Trump is scared.
In the last 24 hours, he’s been tweeting about us, texting about us, and emailing about us … all concerned about the record-breaking response to Bernie’s announcement.
And the truth is, he should be concerned. Because not only does poll after poll show that we do better than any candidate against Trump, but we are running the kind of grassroots campaign that can beat him.
His text message said every donation to his campaign would be matched three times.
Well… Trump’s gonna need a bigger match. Because he is no match for the size and enthusiasm of our political revolution.
Help send Trump a message in a language he’s sure to understand:
The bad news is, we have a president who is a pathological liar, a fraud, a racist, a sexist, a xenophobe and someone who is undermining American democracy as he leads us in an authoritarian direction.
The good news is, ours is the movement that will defeat him.
All our best,
Team Bernie

Our Revolution

Senator Bernie Sanders is running for president in 2020 and our grassroots movement is ready for action. Your support has built a nationwide progressive infrastructure with over 600 local groups that are ready to hit the ground running.
Friends,
Your support has given this movement the most important head start we could hope for: an organized grassroots base spanning the country and ready for action.
Here’s what you’re helping us build:
  • Direct outreach programs for phone banking, texting, and door knocking.
  • One-on-one trainings with group leaders and volunteers.
  • Event hosting guides for anyone and everyone interested in hosting an event.
The political and financial establishment want anyone but Bernie Sanders to be the Democratic nominee in 2020. They need you to believe that he cannot defeat Trump — but the truth is that a majority of Americans support Bernie’s policies.
Medicare for All, a Green New Deal, College for All, a $15 minimum wage and so many other progressive issues are the reasons millions of you across the country brought your voices together to fight for a candidate who will not waver in putting the people and the planet before profits.
Let’s also be clear on this — Bernie did not get 13 million votes in 2016 by playing it safe. He rewrote the rules of what it takes to be a Democratic presidential candidate — instead of meet-and-greets with wealthy donors, Super PACs or special interests, he went straight to you: the people.
No matter where your passion lies, there is a place for you in our grassroots movement. With over 600 local groups ranging from statewide committees to neighborhood groups, we are bringing people together for something revolutionary: electing Bernie Sanders as the next President of the United States.
Let’s fire up the political revolution.
In solidarity,
David Duhalde
