Why we did so well at last night’s debate Bernie Sanders

12 minutes Sunrise Varshini Prakash

Al,
For the last 3 months, thousands of people around the country have been demanding the political and media establishment treat climate change like the emergency it is.
But once again, even though the candidates were eager to discuss climate change, half of them didn’t even get a chance to answer a question on climate change. In a debate that lasted close to three hours, climate got only twelve minutes.1
In a few weeks, we have an opportunity to change this and finally get the climate crisis the attention it demands. Members of the Democratic National Committee from every state are coming together August 22-24th to vote on a proposal to host a climate debate so that voters have an opportunity to hear where the candidates stand on the greatest existential threat of our time.
Last night, even though the climate crisis still didn’t get the debate coverage it needs, we made sure the candidates couldn’t ignore it. Right before they took the stage, thousands of us -- young people, black and brown Detroiters, union members -- were rallying right outside. Together, we delivered a message to the candidates: If you want the support of these communities that are the heart of the Democratic Party, you need to make bringing the Green New Deal to cities like Detroit a day one priority.
And in Detroit, this week, the movement that could actually win a Green New Deal is coalescing. Young people, black and brown people on the frontlines of crisis, and organized workers are uniting to fight for a Green New Deal for Detroit and every city. Together we can finish what the New Deal and the Civil Rights movement started: full economic and racial justice, and meaningful work for all.
Last night’s debate was outrageous and disappointing. But the new coalitions that emerged outside of the debate made it clear that something big is happening and we’re shifting the ground under the political and media establishment.
The people are uniting around the Green New Deal. All we have to do now is get the Democratic Party to listen, to follow where their base is already leading by taking the climate crisis seriously and holding a climate debate.
If we can win this vote and get a climate debate, we will have cemented the climate crisis as a top election issue for the first time in US history. If we all join the call, I believe we can make it happen.

remarkable number of surprisingly major demandsthat RootsAction.org promoted to the U.S. Congress have made it into the House version of the giant military bill called the National Defense Authorization Act.

The bill as a whole is a disaster in terms of wasteful and destructive spending. But as the House and Senate negotiate a joint version, we want to keep in the parts that are truly good.

Click here to email your Representative and two Senators with the following message (and feel free to revise it with your own words):

As your constituent, I urge you to make sure that the final version of the National Defense Authorization Act includes the amendments passed by the House to . . .
  • repeal the Authorization for Use of Military ForceAgainst Iraq Resolution of 2002.
  • prohibit military force in or against Iran.
  • support an end to the Korean War.
  • prohibit support to and participation in the war on Yemen.
  • prohibit the sale of air-to-ground munitions, used in the conflict in Yemen, to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.
  • prohibit funds from the Special Defense Acquisition Fund to aid Saudi Arabia or the United Arab Emirates if such assistance could be used to conduct or continue hostilities in Yemen.
  • prohibit funding the transfer of weapons to Saudi Arabia or the United Arab Emirates under the emergency authority of the Arms Export Control Act.
  • prohibit funding for missiles noncompliant with the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty
  • support extending the New START Treaty, and prohibit the use of funds to withdraw from New START.
  • require that the U.S. military provide Congress with the cost and the national security benefits of every foreign military base or foreign military operation.
  • require the EPA to designate all PFAS (chemicals with which military bases poison ground water) as hazardous substances under the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act.
  • require the EPA to revise the list of toxic pollutants under the Federal Water Pollution Control Act to include PFAS.
  • prohibit DoD funding to house any foreign nationals who are in the custody of and detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
  • study potential cost savings with respect to the nuclear security enterprise and force structure.
  • study cost increases for the W80-4 nuclear warhead life extension program and prevent $185 million from being obligated or expended until the study is completed.
  • prohibit the use of funds for an exhibition or parade of military forces and hardware.
  • prohibit the use of funds from being obligated or expended at properties owned by the President or that bear his name.
  • amend the current statutory prohibition on members of Congress contracting with the federal government to include the President, Vice President, and any Cabinet member.
  • codify a Department of Defense policy to report to the National Instant Criminal Background Check System service members who are prohibited from purchasing firearms.
These major steps forward will be quietly removed from the final bill unless we noisily demand that they stay in. Click here to do your bit, and then forward this email to everyone you can!
