Conversion Campaign Aims To Turn BIW Toward Halting Climate Change

Statewide groups will gather to call on Bath Iron Works to shift its industrial power to addressing climate change at a news conference for the Conversion Campaign on June 21. The conference will take place at 11:00 am in the Portland Public Library, Room 3.

Environmental, faith, labor and social justice leaders will be on hand to share their views on conversion, including Nickie Sekera of Community Water Justice and Barry Dana, past Chief of the Penobscot Nation.

Dana commented, “War will soon be seen by all as a waste of time. We will soon be too consumed with basic survival due to our climate no longer providing life.”

He went on to say, “Our actions of CO2 emissions, of which the military is the largest emitter, along with the millions of people flying, buying goods transported thousands of miles all in the interest of profit margins, comfortable life styles and feeding the rich, will no longer be possible.”

“Survival will consume our every thought and action. Is this the world we want to leave to our grandchildren?"

A 2017 National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration report has projected at least a six inch sea level rise by 2050.

Bruce Gagnon of Brunswick, a member of Veterans for Peace (VFP) said, “Our real security needs as a nation are to urgently address climate change and plan for sea level rise that is already underway. How will this affect BIW’s shipyard in Bath?"

"Continuing to build expensive, provocative and polluting weapon systems like Aegis destroyers ignores climate change as the biggest threat to our collective safety.”

Gagnon has helped organize protests at BIW for the past several years. In 2018 he fasted for 37 days to oppose a tax giveaway by the state of Maine to BIW owner General Dynamics.

“Endorsing the Conversion Campaign addresses these truths and provides a rational lens through which to see an apocalyptic reality,” says Dud Hendrick of VFP, one of a dozen organizations sponsoring the BIW Conversion Campaign.

“The absolute imperative of conversion is all the more undeniable to us in Maine, having the longest coastline in the nation. And, a widely predicted collapse of the lobster fishery in Maine waters due to the associated rising water temperatures would be cataclysmic in every conceivable respect for my home town of Deer Isle.”

“Conversion” should influence every decision our Congressional delegates make in the conduct of their work as our representatives,” concluded Hendrick.

Sign the petition re: Roe v. Wade Ashley Judd

Ashley Judd<moveon-help@list.moveon.org>
To  Alfred F Johnson
Dear MoveOn member,

This is Ashley Judd. I am an actor and activist, and I come from a long line of feisty women who care deeply about their communities.

As you know, our bodily autonomy and right to dignity have been under siege by laws recently passed in Alabama, Georgia, Missouri, and Ohio. These laws severely limit access to abortion and expand state control over pregnant people's bodies—our bodies. Clearly, these state-level laws are part of an aggressive and coordinated war on Roe v. Wade and our right to make private decisions about the most personal aspects of our reproductive lives.

That’s why I’m asking you to sign this petition urging the Supreme Court to protect our bodily autonomy and human rights. The petition was created by the Yellowhammer Fund, a critical organization in Alabama that helps folks access safe abortions.
Don't overturn Roe v. Wade. Protect abortion rights. End the attacks on reproductive rights and pregnant people's health.
People seeking abortion services have long faced complex barriers to receiving the care they need and deserve. The legislation passed in Alabama is the most extreme of the new laws because of its criminalization doctors and pregnant people!

This is unacceptable.
We won't go back to a time when, for pregnant people, unsafe abortions accounted for at least one in six pregnancy-related deaths.1

Please join me in signing Yellowhammer Fund's petition telling Chief Justice John G. Roberts and the Supreme Court justices to end these extreme policies which deny families the right to determine whether, when, and how to create a family.

Thanks for all you continue to do.

DONATION REQUEST -- Massachusetts Delegation Heads to Congress (June 17-19th) Massachusetts Poor People's Campaign

Massachusetts Poor People's Campaign<massachusetts@poorpeoplescampaign.org>
Dear Massachusetts:

The Massachusetts Poor People's Campaign: A National Call for Moral Revival is stronger than ever! We are heading to Washington D.C. to attend the Poor People’s Moral Action Congress from June 17-June 19, 2019. This is our second trip to Washington, D.C. since 2018. We're going to finish what we started and meet with our nation's leaders about the REAL national emergencies impacting those of us on the ground being affected by the four evils plaguing this nation's soul. Last year, with your donations we were able to rent a charter bus, inviting over 75 concerned citizens, impactors and faith leaders to join us at the “Fight Poverty not the Poor” Rally on the mall in Washington D.C.

We met with today's leaders, shared our stories and worked towards bringing more people this year into our nation’s capital.
With your donation, we are able to do the following:

PROVIDE One hundred dollar ($100) Scholarships for room and board + meals (three) a day for four days at a local college for 15 delegates including middle school students, teachers and parents from Roxbury. With your help, we can provide a 15- passenger van to and from D.C. We cannot do it without your support.
THERE ARE TWO WAYS TO MAKE A DONATION:
1. Go Fund Me: (CLICK LINK HERE TO DONATE)
2. Action Network: (CLICK LINK HERE TO DONATE)

On April 28, 2019 the Massachusetts Poor people’s Campaign participated in the national bus tours. In Boston, we rented a school bus and held a "mobile-teach-in" for the national Truth & Poverty "Spill the Tea" Tour.

For four hours we traveled to impacted neighborhoods to meet with faith leaders, activist, middle school students and parents who gathered and shared their struggles.
Please find some reflections from one of our tour supporter’s.

“Yesterday, I joined the Poor People's Campaign Poverty Tour. It was powerful and very interesting. A great group of people from many walks of life! UUA was a co-sponsor. An 8 year old third grader spoke about the hypodermic needles in her school playground; her mother introduced her to Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley, and the only question she wanted to ask her was... "Can we meet so we can talk about the needles in my school and my neighborhood?" I swear the world is not ready for her.... The city hasn't responded, so parents formed Orchard Gardens United (Facebook page). They are organizing a volunteer clean up. Join them if you can.

Methadone Mile was sobering. An active OD as we passed with police on site. This is across the street from Boston City Hospital and the Suffolk County House of Corrections (also ICE detention center). The city is building raised flower beds on a grass strip behind a chainlink fence alongside Melnea Cass Boulevard. Domingos, one of our tour participants, said he picked up 100s of needles in a few hours - The flowers will put window dressing on the area - an attempt to hide but not address the problem.

Systemic Racism in Boston is graphically alive…."

Please join us in making a difference! Whether you donate: $5, $10, $20, $100 or more, any donation will help make an impact on this important time in history as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. so eloquently quoted:

The Arc of the moral universe is long and bends toward justice...

Thanks in advance for your donation to this cause that means so much to the nation.

Forward together, not one-step back!

New survey of corporate leaders shows Wendy’s WAY behind the curve on social responsibility… Coalition of Immokalee Workers

Coalition of Immokalee Workers<workers@ciw-online.org>
… A brand’s reputation depends on how it responds to and interacts with customers. Wendy’s missed the mark by choosing to only respond to positive press. It’s a move that could seriously hurt its image and add fire to the protests.

Now, just weeks after Wendy’s painful public relations failure, comes fresh feedback from the world of corporate communications on the importance of listening to consumers, particularly when it comes to issues of social responsibility and the role of corporations in addressing longstanding social problems like sexual harassment and other abuses at work. And the report, titled “Leading with Purpose in an Age Defined by It,” makes one thing abundantly clear: Corporations, like Wendy’s, that choose to ignore consumers’ demands for real social accountability do so at their own peril.

The report – a survey of 254 “management and C-suite leaders across industries and geographies” carried out by the business-to-business group Quartz Insights, in collaboration with the award-winning corporate communications company WE – starts from the following premise:
We’ve reached an inflection point for defining the role of business in society. It’s no longer sufficient for brands and corporations to focus on maximizing profits at the expense of social good. The public is increasingly looking to the private sector – brands, companies, and organizations – to respond to issues like inequality, climate change, and immigration reform. These issues are simply too big, and their ramifications too massive, for businesses to dismiss. The idea that companies can and should have a broader social impact is transforming how and by whom society’s greatest issues are addressed.

The report goes on to share a number of significant statistics and conclusions drawn from its survey, all of which support the report’s central finding – that “there is an unmatched urgency around purpose leadership,” which the authors define as “how brands can effect change in light of some of the most pressing issues facing our society...”
