If I Could Be The Rain I Would Be Rosalie Sorrels-The Legendary Folksinger-Songwriter Has Her Last Go Round At 83

By Music Critic Bart Webber

Back the day, back in the emerging folk minute of the 1960s that guys like Sam Lowell, Si Lannon, Josh Breslin, the late Peter Paul Markin and others were deeply immersed in all roads seemed to lead to Harvard Square with the big names passing through the Club 47 Mecca and later the Café Nana and Club Blue, the Village down in NYC, North Beach out in San Francisco, and maybe Old Town in Chicago. That is where names like Baez, Dylan, Paxton, Ochs, Collins and a whole crew of younger folksingers who sat at the feet of guys like Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger.  (I should tell you here in parentheses so you will keep it to yourselves that the former three mentioned above never got over that folk minute since they will still tell a tale or two about the times, about how Dave Van Ronk came in all drunk one night at the Café Nana and still blew everybody away, about catching Paxton changing his Army uniform right before a performance at the Gaslight, about walking down the street Cambridge with Tom Rush just after he put out No Regrets/Rockport Sunday strictly aficionado stuff if you go anywhere within ten miles of the subject-I will take my chances here because this notice, this passing of legendary Rosalie Sorrels a decade after her dear friend Utah Phillips is important)

But there was another important strand that hovered around Saratoga Springs in upstate New York, up around Skidmore and some other colleges. That was Caffe Lena’s where some of those names played but also where some upstarts from the West got a chance to play the small crowds who gathered at that famed (and still existing) coffeehouse. Upstarts like Bruce “Utah” Phillips (although he could call several places home Utah was key to what he would sing about). And out of Idaho one Rosalie Sorrels who just joined her long-time friend Utah in that last go-round at the age of 83.

Yeah, out there in the West, not the West Coast west that is different, where what the novelist Thomas Wolfe called the place where the states were square and you had better be as well if you didn’t want to starve or be found in some empty arroyo un-mourned and unloved. A tough life when the original pioneers drifted westward from Eastern nowhere looking for that pot of gold or at least some fresh air and a new start away from crowded cities and sweet breathe vices. Tough for guys like Joe Hill who tried to organize the working people against the sweated robber barons of his day (they are still with us as we are all now very painfully aware. Tough too when you landed in rugged beautiful two-hearted river Idaho, tried to make a go of it in Boise, maybe stopped short in Helena but you get the drift. A different place and a different type of subject matter for your themes.

The last time I saw Rosalie perform in person was back in 2002 when she performed at what was billed as her last go-round, her hanging up her shoes from the dusty travel road. She was on fire that night except the then recent death of another folk legend, Dave Von Ronk, who was supposed to be on the bill (and who was replaced by David Bromberg who did a great job) cast a pall over the proceedings. I will always remember her cover of her classic Old Devil Time that night -yeah, give me one more chance, one more breathe. But I will always think of If I Could Be The Rain whenever I hear her name. RIP Rosalie Sorrels

Joe Hill’s Last Will

My will is easy to decide,
For there is nothing to divide,
My kin don’t need to fuss and moan-
“Moss does not cling to a rolling stone.”
My body? Ah, If I could choose,
I would to ashes it reduce,
And let the merry breezes blow
My dust to where some flowers grow.
Perhaps some fading flower then
Would come to life and bloom again.
This is my last and final will,
Good luck to all of you, Joe Hill

Joe Hill was an IWW man. The Industrial Workers of the World (IWW) was, and is a radical union dedicated to abolishing the wage system and replacing it with a democratic system of workplace organization.

Joe Hill was a migrant laborer to the US from Sweden, a poet, musician and union radical. The term “pie in the sky” is believed to come from his satirical song, “The Preacher and the Slave”.

Hill was framed for murder and executed by firing squad in Salt Lake City, Utah on November 19, 1915. His last words were, “Fire!”

Just before his death he wrote to fellow IWW organizer Big Bill Haywood a letter which included the famous words, “Don’t mourn, Organize”.

The poem above was his will. It was set to music and became the basis of a song by Ethel Raim called “Joe Hill’s Last Will”.

A praise poem by Alfred Hayes became the lyrics of the best-known song about Joe Hill, written in 1936 by Earl Robinson. This was sung so beautifully by Joan Baez at Woodstock in 1969:

Joe Hill

words by Alfred Hayes
music by Earl Robinson

I dreamed I saw Joe Hill last night,
Alive as you and me.
Says I “But Joe, you’re ten years dead”
“I never died” said he,
“I never died” said he.

“In Salt Lake, Joe,” says I to him,
him standing by my bed,
“They framed you on a murder charge,”
Says Joe, “But I ain’t dead,”
Says Joe, “But I ain’t dead.”

“The Copper Bosses killed you Joe,
they shot you Joe” says I.
“Takes more than guns to kill a man”
Says Joe “I didn’t die”
Says Joe “I didn’t die”

And standing there as big as life
and smiling with his eyes.
Says Joe “What they can never kill
went on to organize,
went on to organize”

From San Diego up to Maine,
in every mine and mill,
where working-men defend their rights,
it’s there you find Joe Hill,
it’s there you find Joe Hill!

I dreamed I saw Joe Hill last night,
alive as you and me.
Says I “But Joe, you’re ten years dead”
“I never died” said he,
“I never died” said he.

"The Preacher And The Slave"

Long-haired preachers come out every night,
Try to tell you what’s wrong and what’s right;
But when asked how ’bout something to eat
They will answer in voices so sweet

You will eat, bye and bye,
In that glorious land above the sky;
Work and pray, live on hay,
You’ll get pie in the sky when you die

And the Starvation Army they play,
And they sing and they clap and they pray,
Till they get all your coin on the drum,
Then they tell you when you’re on the bum

Holy Rollers and Jumpers come out
And they holler, they jump and they shout
Give your money to Jesus, they say,
He will cure all diseases today

If you fight hard for children and wife-
Try to get something good in this life-
You’re a sinner and bad man, they tell,
When you die you will sure go to hell.

Workingmen of all countries, unite
Side by side we for freedom will fight
When the world and its wealth we have gained
To the grafters we’ll sing this refrain

You will eat, bye and bye,
When you’ve learned how to cook and how to fry;
Chop some wood, ’twill do you good
Then you’ll eat in the sweet bye and bye

The chorus is sung in a call and response pattern.

You will eat [You will eat] bye and bye [bye and bye]
In that glorious land above the sky [Way up high]
Work and pray [Work and pray] live on hay [live on hay]
You’ll get pie in the sky when you die [That's a lie!]

You will eat [You will eat] bye and bye [bye and bye]
When you’ve learned how to cook and how to fry [How to fry]
Chop some wood [Chop some wood], ’twill do you good [do you good]
Then you’ll eat in the sweet bye and bye [That's no lie]

THE REBEL GIRL

by Joe Hill /words updated/

There are women of many descriptions
In this cruel world as everyone knows
Some are living in beautiful mansions
And wearing the finest of clothes

There's the blue blooded queen and the princess
Who have charms made of diamonds and pearls
But the only and true kind of lady
Is the Rebel Girl

chorus:
She's a rebel girl, a rebel girl
To the working class she's the strength of this world
From Newfoundland to B.C.
She's fighting for you and for me

Yes she's there by our side
With her courage and pride
She's unequalled anywhere

And I'm proud to fight for freedom
With the rebel girl!

Talking Union Lyrics

If you want higher wages, let me tell you what to do;
You got to talk to the workers in the shop with you;
You got to build you a union, got to make it strong,
But if you all stick together, now, 'twont he long.
You'll get shorter hours,
Better working conditions.
Vacations with pay,
Take your kids to the seashore.

It ain't quite this simple, so I better explain
Just why you got to ride on the union train;
'Cause if you wait for the boss to raise your pay,
We'll all be waiting till Judgment Day;
We'll all he buried - gone to Heaven -
Saint Peter'll be the straw boss then.

Now, you know you're underpaid, hut the boss says you ain't;
He speeds up the work till you're 'bout to faint,
You may he down and out, but you ain't beaten,
Pass out a leaflet and call a meetin'
Talk it over - speak your mind -
Decide to do something about it.

'Course, the boss may persuade some poor damn fool
To go to your meeting and act like a stool;
But you can always tell a stool, though - that's a fact;
He's got a yellow streak running down his back;
He doesn't have to stool - he'll always make a good living
On what he takes out of blind men's cups.

You got a union now; you're sitting pretty;
Put some of the boys on the steering committee.
The boss won't listen when one man squawks.
But he's got to listen when the union talks.
He better -
He'll be mighty lonely one of these days.

Suppose they're working you so hard it's just outrageous,
They're paying you all starvation wages;
You go to the boss, and the boss would yell,
"Before I'd raise your pay I'd see you all in Hell."
Well, he's puffing a big see-gar and feeling mighty slick,
He thinks he's got your union licked.
He looks out the window, and what does he see
But a thousand pickets, and they all agree
He's a bastard - unfair - slave driver -
Bet he beats his own wife.

Now, boy, you've come to the hardest time;
The boss will try to bust your picket line.
He'll call out the police, the National Guard;
They'll tell you it's a crime to have a union card.
They'll raid your meeting, hit you on the head.
Call every one of you a goddamn Red -
Unpatriotic - Moscow agents -
Bomb throwers, even the kids.

But out in Detroit here's what they found,
And out in Frisco here's what they found,
And out in Pittsburgh here's what they found,
And down in Bethlehem here's what they found,
That if you don't let Red-baiting break you up,
If you don't let stool pigeons break you up,
If you don't let vigilantes break you up,
And if you don't let race hatred break you up -
You'll win. What I mean,
Take it easy - but take it!

Rally: NO WAR ON IRAN
Saturday, June 22 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm ~  Park Street Station, Boston
The U.S. war and media propaganda machines are currently gearing up for war with Iran. We will rally to say no to war with Iran! To attempt to justify their actions the U.S. government has put out blatantly false propaganda, including the frankly ridiculous assertion that there is a link between Iran and al-Qaeda. If the U.S. attacks Iran it will certainly be a disaster for the people of Iran and the whole region, and it will be a disaster for people here in the U.S. as well.http://masspeaceaction.org/event/rally-no-war-on-iran/

“IRANIAN AGGRESSION”

The NY Times reports today (reprinted in the Globe here) that Trump had ordered an attack on Iran in response to the disputed events around the downing of a US military drone near or over Iranian territory. Typically, the most evenhanded reports have come from foreign media: Iran accuses US of 'provocation' as Trump downplays drone downing (US press tends to omit or downplay the Iranian point of view).  Despite US claims of support for “Iranian Democracy” the spy drone was launched from one of the major US base in the Gulf region based on autocratic monarchies in Qatar, the UAE and Saudi Arabia – each more repressive than the Islamic Republic of Iran.
Interestingly, the Times report indicated unanimous support for war from the White House’s hawkish civilian advisors but qualms from the Pentagon:
Mr. Trump’s national security advisers split about whether to respond militarily. Senior administration officials said Secretary of State Mike Pompeo; John R. Bolton, the national security adviser; and Gina Haspel, the C.I.A. director, had favored a military response. But top Pentagon officials cautioned that such an action could result in a spiraling escalation with risks for American forces in the region.
Image result for cartoon iran iraq LiesWhether Trump was bluffing all along, listened to his cautious generals – or was genuinely concerned about disproportionate escalation of the crisis -- is impossible to know. It could be that Iran had decisiveevidence to back up its claim that the US drone was shot down over its territory.  Factions in government continue to struggle over gaining Trump’s support for more or less aggressive actions in the Middle East.
Additionally, it is impossible to fully understand US policy without noting the wishes of Israel and its US agents in ramping up confrontation with Iran.  The rightwing Israeli press was salivatingover the potential for a US attack – and its security establishment is expressing disappointment with the apparent climb down: Israel said worried US may not respond decisively to drone downingReliable pro-Israel neocons have echoed the warmongering sentiments.
An important new development is that Israel is not able to swing Democrats in Congress toward Trump’s war with Iran or for support for its new-found allies in the Gulf.  Reliable pro-Israel Reps and Senators (like New Jersey’s Bob Menendez and Minority leader Chuck Schumer) have opposed arms sales to Saudi Arabia, support for its Yemen War or a unilateral White House decision to go to war with Iran.

Back from Iran War Brink:
Trump wants to Walk back Iran Crisis that He created with Severe US Sanctions
Trump created this crisis by breaching the 2015 Iran nuclear deal. Having pocketed Iran’s mothballing of 80 percent of its uranium enrichment program, Trump slapped the harshest sanctions ever seen against any country on Iran, unilaterally and in the teeth of opposition from NATO allies and the permanent members of the UN Security Council. In other words, he screwed Iran over…  So Trump’s attempts to back peddle from his hard liners are useless as long as the US has a financial blockade on Iran preventing it from selling its petroleum. A naval blockade preventing a country from exporting a key commodity is considered an act of war in international law. It is hard to see the difference between that and an effective financial blockade.   More

The Fog of Selling a War
Much of the current war-selling fog is remarkably similar to the selling of the Iraq War of 2003, in which the sales campaign depended on fear and an unthinking thirst for revenge after the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The apparent failure to have learned lessons from that blunder reflects another common human tendency, which is to focus narrowly on events of the moment while losing sight of context, background, and history, even recent history…  And amid the fog, roaring illogic gets overlooked. When asked about Iran indicating that, after more than a year of the United States reneging on its obligations under the nuclear agreement, Iran may start exceeding some of the limits on low-enriched uranium, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo declared, “This tells you how flawed the deal was, right?” The absurdity of that statement—attributing to an agreement a problem that directly results from a U.S. assault on the agreement—is breathtaking. More

America’s Confrontation With Iran Goes Deeper Than Trump
Iran could very well have been behind the attacks on the two oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman. But as I wrote for NBC last week, we should be mindful of Trump’s contentious relationship with the truth; Israel’s, Saudi Arabia’s, and the UAE’s deep interest in provoking a US-Iran war; and National Security Adviser John Bolton’s track record as a serial fabricator of intelligence for the purpose of starting wars…  But if war is the endgame of their escalation, what is the endgame of their war? Dominance—perpetual dominance of the Middle East (and the globe as a whole) by the United States. That is and has been Washington’s grand strategy, regardless of whether a Republican, a Democrat, or a reality-TV star has occupied the White House.   More

We are on the Brink of War with Iran. Emergency Rally Saturday 1 PM. Massachusetts Peace Action

Massachusetts Peace Action Brian Garvey<info@masspeaceaction.org>
To  Al Johnson

Dear Al,
Rally: No War on IranWe are on the brink of war with Iran. Last night President Trump ordered a military strike that, by theadministration's own estimate, would have killed 150 Iranians. He changed his mind and it was called back with 10 minutes to spare. That's how close we came to a war with Iran. U.S. strikes will lead to retaliation from Iran. An already tense situation could quickly spiral out of control. The time for us to act and organize is now!
Tomorrow, Saturday June 22nd at 1 PM, join us at an emergency rally at Park Street Station. We need a big turnout. We need you to join us! Let us know you're coming.
We need our elected officials to speak out. Call (202) 224-3121 immediately. Demand that your representative to do all they can to prevent this war. Tell them to speak out publicly and unequivocally. The Trump Administration does not have the authority to start a war on its own initiative. Such an action would be unconstitutional, and impeachable.
The Trump administration’s Iran policies created this crisis. His withdrawal from the nuclear agreement, unnecessary sanctions on Iran's economy, and an increase of military force in the region have brought us within a hair's breadth of disaster. Congress must reclaim its constitutional authority and pass legislation to prevent an unauthorized conflict with Iran.
1) Call the Congressional Switchboard at 202-224-3121
2) Ask for your representative and when connected say:
3) My name is ___________ and I am a constituent living at (your address). I'm extremely concerned by Donald Trump's threats of war with Iran. I’m calling to urge Representative ___________ to take a stand. Please state clearly and publicly that you oppose this war and that you will hold Donald Trump accountable for illegal military action.    Please cosponsor HR.2354 to stand against war.
4) Report back to us by calling (617) 354-2169 or write to us at info@masspeaceaction.org. We need to know what members or their staff had to say so we can keep them accountable.

Yours for peace,
Brian Garvey

No War on Iran Veterans For Peace firmly opposes U.S. attempts to increase tensions in the Persian Gulf and create the conditions for war against Iran.

To  Alfred Johnson

No War on Iran
Veterans For Peace firmly opposes U.S. attempts to increase tensions in the Persian Gulf and create the conditions for war against Iran.
The U.S. has created ongoing tensions with Iran by leaving the Iran Nuclear Deal, by imposing punishing economic sanctions, and by making questionable accusations against Iran.  Veterans know first-hand how dangerous lies and exaggerations can lead the American public into war.
It is imperative that the U.S. immediately begins seeking diplomatic solutions to conflicts instead of creating pretexts for war.  Veterans For Peace calls on the U.S. to:
  • Draw down all its military forces from the Persian Gulf
  • End its economic war against Iran, lifting sanctions immediately
  • Re-join the six-country Iran Nuclear Deal
  • End the 2001 Authorization of Use of Military Force (AUMF) that administration after administration has used to fund military expeditions around the globe under the guise of fighting the Islamophobic “War on Terror”

WHAT YOU CAN DO
Help us by taking action now!
Send a Letter to Congress
Congress needs to hear from YOU!  If the march to war is not halted, the Iranian people’s suffering will only further increase and the U.S. will find itself bogged down in another costly war of choice. Congress must block this administration's path to war and push to return the U.S. to compliance with the nuclear deal and the negotiating table without delay.
Call your Congressional Leaders
Call the Congressional Switchboard at 202-224-3121 and ask to speak to your representative.
About Face: Veterans Against the War created this script:
My name is ____________and I'm a constituent residing in _________. I'm calling today because it's time for Congressmember/Senator ____________ to publicly declare their opposition to this administration's drive to an unauthorized war with Iran. The administration has gotten us to this point by stepping away from the Iran nuclear deal. Ratcheting up military tensions with Iran is unacceptable.

Fast Against U.S. Sanctions
Veterans For Peace member, Sally Alice Thompson has been Fasting Against Sanctions and Siege since June 16th.  Sally is 95 years old and she is on a hunger strike for the child victims of the U.S. government's sanctions and war mongering on the countries where they live--Yemen, Syria, Iran, North Korea, Cuba, Venezuela.
Sally-Alice said, "I am fasting because I empathize with the many hungry children of the world, so I am joining them in their suffering. I am outraged that our country is engaging in sanctions and sieges that result in starvation of babies and children. I am profoundly saddened that my government interferes in the affairs of other countries, refusing to acknowledge their sovereignty and to respect their dignity."
She invites anyone who shares these feelings to join her in her fast, by skipping a meal or fasting for a day or longer.  She would like to know if anyone joins her! Please contact her at sally-aliceanddon@juno.com.
