IN CALIFORNIA VOTE NO ON PROPOSITION 8- THE GAY MARRIAGE BAN AMENDMENT-WITH BOTH HANDS!!!

Earlier this year the California Supreme Court held by a 4-3 vote that the prohibition against same sex marriage violated the California constitution. Needless to say, as has occurred in other locales like Massachusetts, the "social conservatives" there have attempted to overturn that decision by placing a proposition (Proposition 8) banning same sex marriages on the ballot for the November 4, 2008 elections.

Just as adamantly we oppose this measure. Vote NO with both hands on this one. Anyone even vaguely familiar with the politics of this space knows this is a "no-brainer" position that needs no further motivation as a simple measure in defense of democratic rights. Moreover, unless there is some supportable socialist candidate that I have not heard about on the California ballot (no, NOT Cynthia McKinney of the Green Party and certainly not the moribund Peace and Freedom Party) then this may be the only reason to go to the polls on that day. Do so.

  1. Support the local decriminalization of prostitution proposition in San Francisco.

This writer used to live in various parts of California, including a stint in the San Francisco Bay area. However I must confess I do not continue to keep up with the local political developments there like I once did. Thus, news that there is a local proposition on the San Francisco ballot concerning the effective decriminalization of prostitution in that city passed me by until now.

Obviously this is another “no-brainer” like the same-sex marriage question although for a little different reason. Consensual sexual activity between two (or more) people is no question for the government. Effective consent is the standard we should stand by. Thus, all theses so-called ‘victimless’ crimes like drug use and prostitution need to be decriminalized. Enough said. Support this local decriminalization question in San Francisco!

  2. This defeat for same-sex marriage in California with the victory of the Proposition 8 constitutional amendement prohibiting that recognition is very disheartening. If that liberal state, which moveover voted massively for Obama, cannot see the way clear on this simple democratic right we are still in some trouble on one of the key social questions of the day. For those Obamaites who think that the Garden of Eden has come to past this should be sobering news. The struggle continues.
