This was a truly historic accomplishment for the socialist movement in the U.S. A major reason why this Socialist candidate won such a large percentage of the vote was that she did not have to run against multiple candidates; she was running against only one other candidate - a Democrat. So the typical fear that many liberals have of contributing to the election of a Republican when they consider voting for a third party candidate did not exist.
