We nearly blew up Arkansas. Find out how this weekend.
Did you know that we nearly blew up Arkansas? Find out more this weekend!
Hey there, Al!
You've probably heard of Mutually Assured Destruction (MAD). Nuclear proponents claim that it keeps us safe by preventing nuclear war. Anti-nuclear activists challenge that notion, saying that we can't rely on human psychology to keep us safe—especially now that Trump has been elected.
But there's one question even activists like us occasionally fail to ask: What about accidents? Has our mismanagement of our nuclear arsenal ever gotten us nearly killed?
Spoiler alert: It totally has.
A new documentary called Command and Control seeks to explore one such mishap. Based on the bestseller by Eric Schlosser, the film tells the true story of an accident in Arkansas down to the minute, and while the incident itself took place in 1980, its implications about our nuclear security and policy are all too relevant today.
The film is scheduled to air on PBS's The American Experience in January. However, Global Zero has teamed up with the production company in order to hold special pre-release screenings all over the country. In Boston, that's happening this Saturday—and you're invited!
- Who: Anyone and everyone interested in learning more about nuclear security and making the world safer!
- What: We'll be watching Command and Control, and then having a brief discussion about its relevance today. Baked goods will also be served.
- Where: The Fox Branch Library Community Room (175 Massachusetts Ave, Arlington, MA 02474).
- When: This Saturday (December 10th), 3-5 PM
- Why: To build a community that is ready to take action against nuclear weapons. And also to have fun!
I hope to see many of you there this Saturday! If you have any questions, feel free to email us, globalzeroboston@gmail.com.
Best wishes,
Ofelia Cohen-Odiaga, GZBoston Coordinator
