Movie: 'The Take' 9/16 @ 6:00 PM
The Boston May Day Coalition presents:
The Take tells the story of factory workers in Argentina who, instead of acquiescing in unemployment when their factories are shut down, take matters into their own hands by occupying the factories and starting them up again, without the oversight, or permission of their former bosses.
The workers' motto: "Occupy, Resist, Produce". In particular, the film focuses on the efforts of 30 workers to restart the bankrupt Buenos Aires auto-parts factory (Forja San Martin) that once employed them. But this simple act - The Take - has the power to turn the globalization debate on its head. In the wake of Argentina's dramatic economic collapse in 2001, Latin America's most prosperous middle class finds itself in a ghost town of abandoned factories and mass unemployment. They're part of a daring new movement of workers who are occupying bankrupt businesses and creating jobs in the ruins of the failed system.
