Special Guest: Willie Baptist, Author of Pedagogy of the Poor, Building the Movement to End Poverty

Willie Baptist is a formerly homeless father of three who came out of the Watts uprisings and the Black Student Movement. He has 50 years of experience educating and organizing amongst the poor and dispossessed including working as a lead organizer with the United Steelworkers, as an educator and organizer with the National Union of the Homeless and its educational arm, the Annie Smart Leadership Development Institute.

He was the Education Director of the Kensington Welfare Rights Union for 10 years, and a lead organizer and educator for the Poor People’s Economic Human Rights Campaign.

Willie is the author of numerous books, articles, and pamphlets including Pedagogy of the Poor, A New and Unsettling Force: Re-Igniting Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King’s Poor People’s Campaign, and many others.
Here are some examples of his recent writings, as he articulated the revolutionary philosophy behind the Poor People’s Campaign.
During the day, Poor People’s Campaign Homeless committee will be meeting with activists from a number of states in a small invitation only gathering. They will be discussing how to rebuild a national movement of the homeless.
The evening event is a social event focused on building a movement of the poor, with all supporters of the Poor People's Campaign Extremely Welcome.
The event is free, but we will ask for donations at the door to cover the expenses of this event.
