Dear Supporters,
Chelsea got some bad news last week, and needs your help more than ever.
In June, Chelsea had to give up her apartment because she didn't have enough money to pay rent, and is unable to generate any income while in jail.
Despite this fact, Judge Anthony Trenga ruled that she is not only to remain incarcerated until the end of the grand jury, but must pay unprecedented daily fines, which will ultimately total nearly half a million dollars.
Chelsea’s legal team had challenged those sanctions, pointing out that such extreme fines pass from the realm of “coercive sanctions,” into impermissibly punitive sanctions.
Chelsea has made it clear that she will not under any circumstances be coerced to testify, making any sanction ineffective and therefore punitive. Nevertheless, Judge Trenga ordered her to remain confined and pay the fines, claiming that they are coercive, and not punitive.
Here is Chelsea and her team's official statement on this ruling.
Thank you for donating what you can to help Chelsea's legal fight. While Chelsea is prepared to spend the next year in jail, there are still avenues of legal recourse she needs to take.
Sincerely,
The Chelsea Resists Support Committee
P.S. If possible, please select 'Recurring Donation' to maximize your support.
P.P.S. Back in May, Judge Anthony Trenga prevailed upon her to use her confinement as an opportunity to reflect on her principles and objections to the grand jury process. Doing so only reminded her of why she feels so strongly about her principled stance:
