From The "Guardian"-Hands Off Wikileak's Julian Assange- Free Bradley Manning

Markin comment:

For the services that Julian Assange and Bradley Manning are alleged to have done for humankind in order to get at one simple truth- the emperor (or empress) has no clothes-they should be placed very high on the pantheon.
Hands off Julian Assange! Free Private Manning!

From The Private Bradley Manning Support Network-David House’s statement on the WikiLeaks Grand Jury-Hands Off David House!

David House’s statement on the WikiLeaks Grand Jury

David House is a founding member of the Bradley Manning Support Network. He was subpoenaed to appear before a federal grand jury today in Alexandria, VA. House is among several Boston area residents who have been ordered to testify before the grand jury, which is investigating WikiLeaks.

House and his lawyer entered the courthouse this morning at approximately 10:00am ET, amidst a gathering of supporters who held signs with messages of support for House. The rally also called for government transparency and protection for whistle-blowers — and for freedom for accused WikiLeaks source PFC Bradley Manning.

The prosecution initially attempted to prevent David House from taking notes. This was the reason for the recess and reconvening at 4:00pm ET. There was no legal basis for this order, and House was ultimately permitted to take notes.

House was questioned for approximately one hour, beginning at 4:00pm ET. He invoked his Fifth Amendment rights to remain silent. He read from the below statement at 5:00pm ET in the plaza outside of the United States District Court at 401 Courthouse Square in Alexandria, VA.

The Department of Justice (DoJ) is attempting to codify a task it started over 40 years ago: the political regulation of journalism. The same climate of intimidation that surrounded the Pentagon Papers trial persists to this day as the DoJ seeks to limit the freedoms of the Fourth Estate, using the pretense of alleged violations of the Espionage Act.

The show trial that is now underway in Alexandria VA has the potential to set a dangerous precedent for regulating the media. Using Nixonian fear tactics that were honed during the Pentagon Papers investigation, the DoJ is attempting to dismantle a major media organization—WikiLeaks—and indict its editor, Julian Assange. The DoJ’s ever-widening net has now come to encompass academics, students, and journalists in the Cambridge area. The Administration’s goal is to force these individuals to testify against this media organization in an attempt to cast its publications and those of its media partners — the New York Times, the Guardian, Der Spiegel, Le Monde, and El Pais — as acts of espionage. The government has also violated my Fourth Amendment rights by executing a warrantless seizure on my laptop in an attempt to identify, target and ensnare Cambridge-based supporters of WikiLeaks.

It is my conviction that the American people must call for a cessation of the Department of Justice’s politically motivated harassment.

Each Generation Must Find It Own Way To The Fight For Socialist Revolution- Reflections On The June 15, 2011 Boston Rally To Free Private Bradley Manning and Defend David House (Wikileaks)- A Short Note

Markin comment:

I have repeatedly, echoing comrades V. I. Lenin and Leon Trotsky, more times than I care to remember noted in this space that youth, young radicals, potential young communists from our perspective must (and, hopefully, will) find there own ways to socialism, and the struggle for the liberating effects of socialist revolution as the way to get there. And I still, fervently at times, believe that and believe it more strongly the older I get. Youth must have the space and time to make their own mistakes, and create their own successes, before stepping up to the “bigs.” Thus, any socialist organization worthy of the name, worth its salt, has a youth organization that, if it follows Leninist norms, is organizationally independent although politically subordinate to the party and acts as a transmission belt to that party. However on some days I wonder, wonder at least a little, about the capacities of the current “youth” generation to get animated by socialist ideas.

And June 15, 2011 was one of those days. A demonstration had been called by an organization, (see details below), seeking to free Private Bradley Manning and defend David House and others (also see details below) from grand jury snooping investigations into their possible connections with Wikileaks. Fair enough. For the past year the Manning case has been near and dear to me. I will demonstrate, and gladly, for his release when a call is made even if there are only two of us responding. I have also taken up, on more than one occasion, the slogan-Hands Off Wikileak! Obviously that includes anyone rounded up by the government dragnet trying to break up the work of that organization. So, of course, I showed up with some of my comrades on June 15th.

Now class-war prisoner defense work, which is what this rally was all about, generally entails joining with liberals, left or otherwise, civil liberties-types, defenders of democratic rights in general, and the usual motley crew of leftists of various persuasions, including self-styled socialists and communists. Hell, these days even a stray libertarian, perhaps fearful that they may be next as well, will show up to these events. Again I have no problem with that, after all the slogan “an injury to one is an injury to all” casts a wide net. What was bothersome, a little, but enough to write this comment was the amazing lack of political savvy by those young democrats who organized this thing. Frankly I blushed at their studied naivete and compared to theirs my own youthful liberal idealistic naivete would have made me a flaming radical.

Other that speeches by that motley crew of leftists offering their cures, or non-cures, the “kids” seemed to be stuck on some high school civics idealistic concept of American democracy. Like, somehow, a little tweaking might work to “correct” society’s ills. No talk, not even close, of some connection between the Manning and House cases, the myriads wars going on with American sponsorship, the economic crisis and some possible socialist solutions, even reformist ones. Worst, for a man raised on the principle that if you are going to be in the streets, the mean American political streets, then you had better be organized, and militant, meaning sometimes loud and with some discipline. The spirit here was one of a half-hearted lethargy as we were “guided" in a march around the city hall and Boston Common and if certain older militants hadn’t stepped into the gap passers-by might have taken the march for a Quaker vigil. Let’s put it this way, there is plenty of work to do if the youth generation of today wants to turn the world upside down, and for the better.

6 pm - 8 pm
Government Center ;

Protest with banners, music, whistle-blowing, education, and speaking out
against government repression.

We are gathering to protest the detainment and unfair treatment of Bradley
Manning and the pending grand jury investigation that seeks to embroil
WikiLeaks, its associates, and its supporters in espionage charges. Recent
attacks on its citizens has made it clear to us that the United States
government no longer automatically grants freedom and liberty to its
governed.

David House and other activists in the Boston area have faced heavy
surveillance and computer seizure by homeland security, without warrants,
and have been offered bribes as a result of their connections to WikiLeaks
and Bradley Manning.

These attacks against activists are nothing compared to what we will face if
the grand jury decides to extradite Julian Assange on charges of espionage.
Due to the vague wording of the Espionage Act, there will remain “no
distinction between the leaker, the recipient of the leak, or the
100thperson to redistribute, retransmit, or even retain the national
defense
information that, by that point, is already in the public domain”, a Hearing
Before the House Committee on the Judiciary determined (< http://judiciary.house.gov/hearings/pdf/Vladeck101216.pdf>;). This will give
the government the legal groundwork to incriminate anyone who supports
WikiLeaks, and perhaps any organization that provides an outlet for
whistle-blowers in the future.

Subpoenas have been served to David and others in Greater Boston to appear
before the grand jury. The date of his appearance is the day of our protest,
which we have chosen to show our solidarity, as subpoenaed activists risk
being held in contempt and jailed for the duration of the trial should they
refuse to cooperate with the grand jury.

We have taken this abuse long enough. We, Civic Counsel, students and
concerned citizens, believe it is time to stand up for our own rights and
those of the people around us. If we do nothing, we risk losing the rest of
our freedom and privacy. The government seeks to remove even our most basic
rights: the rights to speak up for justice and hold our so-called
“representatives” accountable. The trends of rampant corruption, unnecessary
withholding of information, and unlawful detainment of citizens must end.

Protest with us on Wednesday. This is your country. This is your government.
These are your neighbors who have been targeted. Stand with us.

Not in Boston? Civic Counsel encourages you to organize autonomous action in
your own city. A full list of action in Boston and other cities will be
posted on our website at ;.

If you are in Boston, we invite you to join us for a banner making party at
Pika ; on Tuesday the 14th at 6 PM. Please bring your
own supplies if possible. Also please note that no sticks are allowed either
as part of signs or carried by protesters, as they are, apparently,
considered weapons.

RSVP online: ;

Make June Class-War Prisoners Freedom Month

Markin comment (reposted from 2010)

In “surfing” the National Jericho Movement Website recently in order to find out more, if possible, about class- war prisoner and 1960s radical, Marilyn Buck, whom I had read about in a The Rag Blog post I linked to the Jericho list of class war prisoners. I found Marilyn Buck listed there but also others, some of whose cases, like that of the “voice of the voiceless” Pennsylvania death row prisoner, Mumia Abu-Jamal, are well-known and others who seemingly have languished in obscurity. All of the cases, at least from the information that I could glean from the site, seemed compelling. And all seemed worthy of far more publicity and of a more public fight for their freedom.

That last notion set me to the task at hand. Readers of this space know that I am a long time supporter of the Partisan Defense Committee, a class struggle, non-sectarian legal and social defense organization which supports class war prisoners as part of the process of advancing the international working class’ struggle for socialism. In that spirit I am honoring the class war prisoners on the National Jericho Movement list this June as the start of what I hope will be an on-going attempt by all serious leftist militants to do their duty- fighting for freedom for these brothers and sisters. We will fight out our political differences and disagreements as a separate matter. What matters here and now is the old Wobblie (IWW) slogan - An injury to one is an injury to all.

Note: This list, right now, is composed of class-war prisoners held in American detention. If others are likewise incarcerated that are not listed here feel free to leave information on their cases in the comment section. Likewise any cases, internationally, that come to your attention. I am sure there are many, many such cases out there. Make this June, and every June, a Class-War Prisoners Freedom Month- Free All Class-War Prisoners Now!

Ellsberg, Assange, and others attend Bradley Manning press call

May 25, 2011. Bradley Manning Support Network

Noted attorneys, military experts, and transparency advocates who support Private First Class Bradley Manning held a press teleconference this morning (Wed., May 25, 2011, 11:00am ET) to discuss updates in Manning’s situation. PFC Bradley Manning is accused of being the source of revelations leaked to WikiLeaks, including diplomatic cables that many experts believe helped to catalyze democratic revolts across the Middle East. His supporters assert that the information PFC Manning is accused of revealing should have been in the public domain.

The complete audio from the call can be downloaded with the link below:

Reflections from the Quantico War-Zone – The Rally for Private Bradley Manning-March 20th 2011.

Click on the headline to link to a CNN film clip of the rally at Quantico Marine Base in Virginia on March 20, 2011 in support of alleged Army whistleblower Private Bradley Manning.

Markin comment:

Quantico was like a war-zone with more police than you could shake a stick at. All in order to show that old-time radicals, Veterans for Peace, codepink women, assorted Quakers, little old ladies in tennis sneakers, little old men in tennis sneakers and others out to protest the outrageous treatment of alleged whistleblower Private Bradley Manning were some threat to civilized society. Damn Obama and his crowd. Free Bradley Manning!
