Sign Petition to Drop All Charges Against Okinawa Anti-Bases Activist

----- Forwarded Message -----

Although I am sure that you have already known it very well and finished doing it, I will send you this request concerning the petition by the Conference on U.S. Foreign Military Bases to support three Japanese peace activists in Okinawa who have jailed illegally because of their nonviolent protest against the new U.S. Marine base in Henoko.  Please read the message below (I wrote it according to a request from my Japanese friend), and if you share it with your friends who have not done it yet, I will be very grateful to you.

To sign the petition, please go to their web site: NoForeignBases.org and scroll down to the petition on the right sidebar in English and Japanese.

==================
Dear Friends of peace

I am writing this letter to ask for your support concerning three Japanese peace activists who have been jailed unjustly in Okinawa.  They are Mr. Horoji Yamashiro, Mr. Hiroshi Inaba, and Mr. Atsuhiro Soeda.  They were arrested illegally because for their nonviolent protest against the new U.S. Marine base being constructed in Henoko, Okinawa.

The decision of the court in their trial is going to be pronounced on March 14 in Naha District Court.  To support these three activists for a not guilty judgment, which they full deserve, as you may have known, the Conference on U.S. Foreign Military Bases has started a global petition I have placed below.  I thank this organization for their brave decision and work for peace and these three, and request you to join their petition.

To sign the petition, please go to their web site: NoForeignBases.org and scroll down to the petition on the right sidebar in English and Japanese.

Every signed petition will be immediately sent to the Naha Court in Okinawa, and emailed to Ambassadors of Japan to the United Nations and the United States.

Japan has Article 9, the peace clause in its Constitution.  Under this clause, Japan renounces forever any war and armament as a means to resolve various international conflicts.  All Japanese governments since 1947, when the Constitution of Japan was enforced, have been ordered firmly to obey Article 9.  In the context of this clause, the new US base in Henoko is illegal, and the three activists’ nonviolent protest against this base should be protected under Japanese laws.  Whatever Prime Minister Abe and his administration say, Article 9 has a priority over the Security Treaty between the United State of America and Japan, which the successive Japanese governments have used as a reason of building this base in Henoko and other U.S. bases.

We, Japanese citizens seek to live in peace in Okinawa and anywhere else in Japan.  These three activists above have fought for this purpose.  Please help them.  Please sign this petition (if you have not done it so already), and share it with your friends globally.

Thank you for reading this letter and your cooperation.

With my sincere prayer for peace,
 Narumi

Keep up the momentum: Fund the Wendy's Boycott buses!

To

Movements don't come together overnight.

They are built with years of persistence and patience. From the time they began meeting in a local church in 1993, farmworkers captured this insight in the form of a simple formula, one the community uses to this day: Consciousness + Commitment = Change. And this week, we witnessed an extraordinary show of the commitment from the Fair Food Nation.

Last Tuesday, we sent out a call for urgently-needed resources to the network — because in just two short weeks, we will journey together with over 50 farmworkers and their families from Immokalee to New York City for the weeklong Freedom Fast, and we will bring several hundred allies from as far west as Michigan for the massive #TimesUpWendys march.

So we asked for your help.  And we were inspired by your response.

Over 150 of you sent in contributions within the first two days!  From one donation of $2.63 to several of $500, people from San Diego to Baltimore sent in what they could to help. Churches called us asking about plans to sponsor a bus-load.

As of today, we have gained a lot of ground, but there's still a ways to go. We still have a significant funding gap to meet for the 6 buses and 3 caravans we are planning.

Today, based on the generosity of the Fair Food Nation so far, we are setting our new goalpost to 400 donors by March 11th, when the Freedom Fast begins in NYC. If we can reach 400 donors, we will be on target to meet our budget and get every last person ready to march alongside farmworkers to New York City. With such an overwhelming response the first time around, we know we can count on you.

See you in NYC!

Dear friends,
As a Jew, I am all too aware that history has been painted with the blood of individuals whose only crime was being born Jewish. The stigma of living life as a minority has forever shaped Jewish history and the histories of many other peoples. Therefore, I am always taken aback when I see any group of people who face discrimination not for their actions, but simply for being alive.

I know that Jewish leadership has made sure that any assertion of commonality between Jew and Palestinian is denied. But throughout history, from Poland to Iraq, from Argentina to South Africa, from Brooklyn to Mississippi, Jews have taken up their quest for justice, and their desire for a more just world, by joining with others in collective struggles. Jews have participated prominently in the workers’ struggle of the Depression era, in the civil rights movement, in the struggle against South African Apartheid, in the struggle against fascism in Europe, and in many other movements for social and political change.

Obviously the State of Israel’s historic and ongoing oppression of the Palestinian people contradicts and betrays these long histories of Jewish participation in collective liberation struggles.

Thus, I invite you to join me in my support for the Canadian Boat to Gaza, and its insistence on ending the illegal and immoral blockade imposed by the Israeli State on over 2 million Palestinian civilians living in the Gaza Strip.

Let's challenge the legality of the inhumane blockade of Gaza’s 2 million inhabitants, most of whom are refugees and children.

Let's expose the Canadian government’s complicity in this act of collective punishment of defenceless civilians.

Let's demonstrate to the people living under the blockade that the world has not forgotten them.

Let's stand in solidarity with the Palestinian people.

Let's support the Canadian Boat to Gaza right now!

For Frederick Douglass On His 200th Birthday- JOHN BROWN- THE AVENGING ANGEL

DVD REVIEW

JOHN BROWN'S HOLY WAR, PBS DOCUMENTARY, 2000

From fairly early in my youth I knew the name John Brown and was swept up by the romance surrounding his exploits at Harpers Ferry. For example, I knew that the great anthem of the Civil War -The Battle Hymn of the Republic- had a prior existence as a tribute to John Brown and that Union soldiers marched to that song as they headed south. I was then, however, neither familiar with the import of his exploits for the black liberation struggle nor knew much about the specifics of the politics of the various tendencies in the struggle against slavery. I certainly knew nothing then of Brown’s (and his sons) prior military exploits in the Kansas ‘proxy’ wars against the expansion of slavery. Later study filled in some of those gaps and has only strengthened my strong bond with his memory. Know this, as I reach the age at which John Brown was executed I still retain my youthful admiration for him. In the context of the turmoil of the times he was the most courageous and audacious revolutionary in the struggle for the abolition of slavery in America. Almost 150 years after his death this writer is proud to stand in the tradition of John Brown.

This documentary, for friend and foe alike, brings out the main issues of John Brown’s personal life and the political turmoil of his times. As usual in such endeavors the producers attempt to give an even-handed account by bringing in historians and others from many perspectives. And that is fine, especially for defenders of Brown, in these times when many right-wing tendencies have tried to invoke his name for their unworthy causes and the term 'terrorist' is freely bantered about as a universal term of abuse. In a sense this documentary, unintentionally I am sure, brings him back to his proper place as an avenging angel for the progress of humankind.

And what of the issues of Brown’s life and times? The documentary covers it all pretty well; his Calvinist upbringing and early abhorrence of slavery; his failures in various business ventures; his ‘monomaniacal' view that slavery must be abolished brought to life early on as a stationmaster in the Underground Railroad; his guerrilla fights in Kansas, including his role in the controversial murders of some pro-slavery forces there; his strategic and tactical military errors at Harper's Ferry; his stoic and resolute demeanor in face of his execution; and, of course, his subsequent legend. For those not familiar with John Brown this is a quick primer which should be supplemented with some reading. There are an abundant number of books on his life. Check them out.
