ACTION REPORT: Students, people of faith and community allies drop banners in support of Wendy’s Boycott! Coalition of Immokalee Workers

Coalition of Immokalee Workers<workers@ciw-online.org>
Last week, amidst the scramble of final exams and Easter weekend preparations, students, people of faith and community allies in over a dozen cities from coast to coast put their solidarity with the Wendy’s Boycott on display! From Washington State to Rhode Island, the Fair Food Nation dropped protest banners to expose the hypocrisy of Wendy’s refusing to pay an extra penny per pound of tomatoes to ensure farmworkers’ dignity in the fields even as the company invests $25 million in digital media to secure consumers’ loyalty.

Today, we bring you just a few of the visual highlights from SFA’s “We Won’t Yield” National Day of Action on April 18! Because the banners below speak for themselves. After passing a unanimous resolution to ban Wendy’s from campus until the fast-food giant joins the Fair Food Program, students at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, FL, suspend a banner from the second floor balcony at the Ritter Art Gallery...

Stand Between Trump and Ilhan Omar RootsAction

RootsAction Norman Solomon<info@rootsaction.org>

President Trump has openly and explicitly encouraged individual violence many times as president and as a candidate. From Charlottesville to New Zealand, violent people have credited Trump as an inspiration.
"If I talked about the stupid subway the way Trump talks about Muslims, I’d get a visit from the Department of Homeland Security," wrote Elie Mystal in The Nation this week. "If I tweeted about Trump Tower the way Trump tweets about Omar, I’d get a visit from DHS and the Secret Service."

Trump has focused his incitement of bigotry and violence on Congresswoman Ilhan Omar, and we need to stand up together against it. Click here to contribute to Ilhan's re-election campaign.

Just a week after one of his supporters was arrested by the FBI for threatening to shoot Congresswoman Ilhan Omar in the head, Trump tweeted a misleading and inflammatory video promoting just the sort of hatred toward Omar that the man arrested had expressed.

Just hours after Omar reported an increase in the death threats she had received since Trump's tweet (many of them referring to Trump's tweet), Trump tweeted again, this time falsely accusing Ilhan of "U.S. HATE statements."

This will only continue to escalate unless we stand up against it, unless we show that Trump's attacks actually produce a surge of support for those he targets.

Click here to donate to Congresswoman Omar's re-election campaign and to support the work of RootsAction.org.

Thank you!

Chelsea Manning and Her Attorneys Respond to 4th Circuit Court of Appeals Ruling Affirming Contempt and Continuing Her Detention

Chelsea Manning and Her Attorneys Respond to 4th Circuit Court of Appeals Ruling Affirming Contempt and Continuing Her Detention

Chelsea Manning and Her Attorneys Respond to 4th Circuit Court of Appeals Ruling Affirming Contempt and Continuing Her Detention

0SHARES
Alexandria, VA — This morning, the 4th Circuit Court of Appeals affirmed the District Court’s finding of contempt and denied Chelsea Manning’s motion for release on bail.
Neither decision included any legal reasoning or explanation for the Court’s conclusions.
Ms. Manning is now contemplating other post-contempt remedies including an appeal to the whole panel of Fourth Circuit judges (called an “En Banc” panel) or to the Supreme Court.
“While disappointing, we can still raise issues as the government continues to abuse the grand jury process. I don’t have anything to contribute to this, or any other grand jury. While I miss home, they can continue to hold me in jail, with all the harmful consequences that brings. I will not give up. Thank you all so very much for your love and solidarity through letters and contributions.”
Moira Meltzer-Cohen, of Ms. Manning’s legal team, explained why Chelsea’s subpoena and confinement should be considered grand jury abuse:

“We are of course disappointed that the Circuit declined to follow clearly established law, or consider the ample evidence of grand jury abuse.

“It is improper for a prosecutor to use the grand jury to prepare for trial. As pointed out in Ms. Manning’s motions and appeals, since her testimony is not necessary to the grand jury’s investigation, the likely purpose for her subpoena is to help the prosecutor preview and undermine her potential testimony as a defense witness for a pending trial.

“We believed that the Appeals court would consider this, as it is strong evidence of an abuse of grand jury power that should excuse her testimony.”
In February, 2019, Chelsea Manning was subpoenaed to give testimony before a grand jury sitting in the Eastern District of Virginia. On March 5, she moved District Court Judge Claude Hilton to quash the subpoena on a number of legal grounds, but her motions were denied.
After refusing to answer questions before the grand jury, Chelsea was found in civil contempt of court and conveyed to the Alexandria Detention Center on March 8. She has remained in confinement since that time, enduring medical hardships and prolonged isolation.
During her confinement she appealed Judge Hilton’s finding of contempt, asserting legal justifications for her refusal to cooperate with the grand jury. Today’s rulings conclude the first phase of appeals.

May 4 at 12 noon: "Roots of revolution in China: the student-led May 4th movement of 1919 and its impact today"

*Marking the 100th Anniversary of the May Fourth Movement in China*

*"Roots of revolution in China: the student-led May 4th movement of 1919
and its impact today"*

*May 4th, 2019: 12-2pm *

*Center for Marxist Education -- 550 Mass. Ave., Central Square, Cambridge*

A film segment on the history of the period will be followed by a
presentation by Charles Zhengyang Xiao, a local high school student
inspired by the May Fourth Movement

Commentary by Emily Dong, who aims to apply lessons of the movement to
today’s world, especially African-Asia relations inspired by WEB DuBois,
Paul Robeson and the Chinese Revolution

The May Fourth Movement of 1919 is one of the most important events in
China's 20th century history of modernization and revolution. Mass
student-led demonstrations in Beijing and nationwide protested the
imperialist machinations at Versailles after World War I, which awarded
German concessions in Shandong Province to Japan -- even though China
fought on the side of the victorious allies. Despite helping win the war,
China was treated as a loser!

The protests soon targeted the weak Chinese government which acquiesced in
the decision, not standing up for its basic rights at the international
conference. The students called for modernization of science and
technology, democracy and radical change in semi-feudal and semi-colonial
China. Soon the movement united students, patriotic merchants and
workers. The movement was a major contributor to the founding of the
Communist Party of China in 1921 and the advance of the Chinese revolution,
which would soon incorporate peasants and one day shake the world. There
will be important commemorations across the country this year.

Today, China is concerned with many of the same issues: 1) resisting
imperialist pressure, but now with strength; 2) advancing to the forefront
of modern science and technology, such as the cutting edge China 2025
program; 3) improving socialist governance and democracy, such as the
anti-corruption campaign. The most important current campaign is the
elimination of poverty before 2021, the 100th anniversary of the founding
of the CCP.

The program will review the May Fourth Movement and related history, and
discuss its ongoing impact. Please join us; it is not possible to
understand contemporary China without knowing some basic history!

*Co-sponsored by US-China Peoples Friendship Association of New England.*

*We regret the program is not at an accessible location.*

COFAMIPRO began in 1999 out of the radio program “Sin Fronteras” or
“Without Borders” transmitted by Radio Progreso | Página Oficial
<https://www.facebook.com/RadioProgresoPaginaOficial/> and formed into
an organization to search for the loved ones of Hondurans that
disappeared on the migrant trail to the United States. Today, COFAMIPRO
brings attention to the human rights violations committed against
migrants and the push factors that force migrants to flee their homes,
calling for governments to take responsibility. Committed to the work of
advocating for the rights of migrants, Rosa Nelly has traveled around
the world, sharing the story of Honduran migrants and their families.

Extensive reading, activist materials and advocacy information about the
