Standout: No Fire. No Fury. War is not an Option in Korea or Iran

Veterans For Peace will protest US threats against North Korea and call for peaceful solution of our differences with that country. All are welcome to join.

War in Korea is not an option or a solution to the growing and increasingly dangerous confrontation over North Korea’s nuclear program. And now, as if the threat of war in Korea was not enough, President Trump is moving to withdraw from the Iran Nuclear Deal. If that happens, the danger of a new war in the Middle East increases dramatically. In addition, such a decision would so weaken U.S. credibility in regard to our international commitments that it would undermine the possibility of a negotiated settlement with North Korea.

Media accounts give us a distorted picture of what’s possible by leaving out key pieces of the story about Korea. In fact a peaceful settlement remains within reach in Korea. But the immediate need is to reduce the growing tension. That can be achieved if the Trump administration engages in direct talks with no preconditions. Such a move could create the conditions that lead first to an end to North Korea’s tests in return for an end to U.S. threats and military exercises — and eventuallylead to a negotiated settlement based on common security of all countries involved. Such an agreement was actually negotiated 20 years ago by the Clinton Administration but trashed by President Bush who named North Korea a part of the “Axis of Evil”.
