SOAW Invites Veterans For Peace to the Encuentro!

Dear Veterans For Peace,
We're writing to invite you to the upcoming 2018 SOA Watch Encuentro, "Dismantle Border Imperialism:  Struggle, Create, Power to the People."  As a valuable partner that brings a critical ant-militarism lens, we are excited to continue this struggle alongside Veterans For Peace, whom we have partnered with since our earliest days at the gates of Ft. Benning.
So far, over 25 local VFP chapters have endorsed the Encuentro, including VFP National. To this we say, thank you. There is still time for other chapters to endorse, by following the link here. For those individuals planning on attending this year, please take a moment to register. There is no cost to attend the Encuentro, but we would like to know how many programs to print. Look for updates here, and check out our most recent video put together by friends in the struggle.
We are grateful for the partnerships we have forged over the past 28 years, and look forward to continue struggling alongside you until we achieve collective liberation across borders!
Scroll down for ways to get involved in the Encuentro!

Join VFP at the Border!

VFP enthusiastically supports this year's theme "Dismantle Border Imperialism! Struggle, Create, Power to the People!"  Please join us, November 16-18, and many other peace and justice groups on the border.

SOAW strives to expose, denounce, and end US militarization, oppressive US policies and other forms of state violence in the Americas. Often these Latin American political and economic policies are directly linked to forced displacement, increased violence, and militarized borders. And as we call attention to the militarization of the border and Latin America, we also call for an end to state-sponsored terrorism and violence against our communities inside the United States.

We stand with organizations and movements working for justice and peace throughout the Americas. There is no wall or border that can deter the solidarity of the people!

Paul Cox Reviews New Book on the VA

"As a Vietnam veteran who served in the Marines between 1968 and 1972, I am all too familiar with the wounds of war Suzanne Gordon describes in her excellent new book.  Like so many people who served in Vietnam, I live with PTSD, health issues from Agent Orange exposure, the skeletal wear and tear from lugging heavy packs in the jungle for 18 months, and hearing loss—much luckier than many, unluckier than some.
I know how hard it was to get Congress and the VA to recognize these—and other—wounds of war.  Thanks to veterans’ efforts over many decades, veterans have benefited from what the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) has done to address them.
That’s why this book is both important and timely. Wounds of War: How the VA Delivers Health, Healing, and Hope to the Nation’s Veterans tells the story of one healthcare journalist’s journey through our nation’s largest, and perhaps most misunderstood—mischaracterized, actually—healthcare system."

VFP Members on Speaking Tour In Japan

U.S. VFP Members continue their speaking tour in Japan.  Mike Hastie and Nathan Lewis join Rachel Clark in a whirlwind tour speaking out against U.S. militarism and war.
They have been sending regular reports, last week brought two report backs and this week we have three more to add, so make sure to check them all out!
An excerpt:
"Our presentation at Kanazawa was once again very informative and emotionally powerful for the Japanese audience. The room was packed with over ninety people. There were several newspaper reporters in attendance, along with a T.V. news crew. Nathan and I were interviewed by a couple of reporters who wanted us to clarify certain comments we made in our individual talks. When we were interviewed by the local T.V. station, they asked both of us the same question: " What is your main message to Japanese audiences?" I answered that question by saying: "War has nothing to do with protecting America's borders. It has absolutely nothing to do with freedom and democracy. U.S. wars are always about corporate profiteering, and global dominance. Wherever U.S. corporations go, the U.S. military follows to protect those corporate interests."
And check out this amazing coverage by Hokuriku Asahi Broadcasting that covered the speaking tour as a mini TV documentary.

Minnesotans March to Demand End to U.S. Wars

More than 75 people rallied and marched through the Cedar Riverside neighborhood, October 21, as part of an demonstration organized by the MN Peace Action Coalition.
Mike Madden, a longtime member of Veterans for Peace, spoke to what it means when people say “thank you for your service.” He said, “Please don’t thank me for my military service. The first year and a half of my enlistment coincide with the final year and a half of the American war in Vietnam. To the extent my service enabled or prolonged the war, it did more harm than good...Honoring a war hero has the effect of conferring the honor of the individual onto the war and its policy. But when a nation has committed an act of military aggression, it may lay not claim to military heroes. The honorable people are those who oppose the war, whether they wear the uniform or not.” He encouraged the crowd to continue their service and work for peace.

New Member Spotlight: Daniel Kovalik

Daniel Kovalik graduated from Columbia Law School in 1993.   He is a labor and human rights attorney, and has served as in-house counsel for the United Steelworkers union for over 25 years.  He also teaches International Human Rights at the University of Pittsburgh School of Law.   He has written three books, including his latest, “The Plot to Control the World:  How The US Spent Billions to Change the Outcome of Elections Around The World.”
Reason for Joining VFP:
"I travelled with Veterans Peace Convey to Nicaragua in 1988.    During this trip, which was organized by VFP, I spent two months with numerous veterans who had dedicated themselves to struggling for peace and to aiding those around the world who have suffered at the hands of US militarism.   Most of these veterans had fought in Vietnam, and they knew better than anyone how brutal and cruel war could be – to both combatants and civilians alike.   I think about that experience every day, and of the veterans who impressed me with their relentless efforts to resist war, and above all with their kindness and camaraderie.   I am honored to be able to join their ranks as an associate member of Veterans for Peace."

Voices Rising for Yemen

Please Join Voices for Creative Nonviolence For THREE DAYS OF ACTION at the Saudi and US Missions to the UN, New York City, November 6 , 7, 8 2018
Dire conditions in Yemen call for our urgent attention and action. Let's encourage one another to take immediate action in the face of looming escalation of attacks in Yemen and consequent suffering caused by rising prices for food and fuel plus and other war related exacerbation of near-famine conditions.
While we seek immediate actions cross country, a number of people have planned for an action in early November, -- November 6, 7, and 8, across from and near the United Nations on First Avenue. We propose setting up 34 backpacks at the Isaiah Wall and handing out fliers while holding placards on November 6, beginning at 10:00 a.m. We realize this is election day, and our numbers might be small, but we especially call on people to consider participating in a nonviolent direct action on November 8, most likely in mid-morning, again relying on the visual of blue backpacks to represent 34 children, on a school field trip, who were killed when a Lockheed Martin manufactured missile was fired by a Saudi warplane and directly hit their schoolbus.
Voices for Creative Nonviolence has a list of resources for potential protests.

Reclaiming Armistice Day: Submit Your Event

Veterans For Peace has been celebrating Armistice Day almost since the organization's inception, with a few chapters doing yearly events.  However, in 2008 the effort became a national effort with the passage of an official Veterans For Peace resolution.  Since then, chapters across the country have been "Reclaiming Armistice Day" pushing the celebration of peace into the national conversation on Veterans Day.

One hundred years ago the world celebrated peace as a universal principle.  The first World War had just ended and nations mourning their dead collectively called for an end to all wars.  Armistice Day was born and was designated as “a day to be dedicated to the cause of world peace and to be thereafter celebrated."

Golden Rule Pacific Voyage Delayed

The Golden Rule peace boat will regrettably have to delay their Pacific voyage. During a sea trial on October 17th the historic wooden sailboat got 100 miles offshore before needing to return to San Diego Bay.
Many aspects of the trip were a success but the attempt brought to light a few shortcomings that will need to be addressed before the crew attempts the journey. At the moment the Golden Rule is in anchorage near Harbor Island while decisions are being made on how to proceed. Our weather window will close before the necessary work can be done, so the Pacific voyage will likely be delayed until spring.

Stop Banking the Bomb Celebrates 1 Year Anniversary with Coordinated Actions

October 13 marked just over a year since Stop Banking the Bomb began its campaign against PNC Bank. Starting with just a handful of Pittsburgh volunteers from the ANSWER Coalition, Veterans For Peace, the Party for Socialism and Liberation and a few other anti-war activists, the campaign is now sponsored by over 30 local, regional and national anti-imperialist organizations. Since launching in late September 2017, the campaign has conducted over 40 actions against PNC Bank in Pittsburgh and around the country.
To mark our one-year anniversary, on October 13, the campaign conducted its first triple city coordinated action against PNC Bank. Working with our ANSWER Coalition and PSL allies in Dayton, OH and Lancaster, PA, we held three actions in three cities in front of three PNC Banks.
These pickets will continue unabated, every two weeks in Pittsburgh, PA and in many other cities around the country. We will not stop until PNC meets our demands to STOP BANKING THE BOMB!

Tue Oct 30 Justice for Terrence Coleman, Vigil & Speakout 6pm, Peter's Park, South End, Boston

OCT30

Vigil and Speakout - Justice For Terrence Coleman

Public

Details
October 30 marks two years since the night where Boston police officers Kevin Finn and Garrett Boyle shot and killed 31-year old Black man Terrence Coleman in the hallway of his home in the South End of Boston.

The police claim Mr. Coleman had a knife and threatened two police officers and two EMTs. His mother, Hope Coleman, had called for an ambulance for her son and not the police. She was next to him when he was shot and insists Terrence did not have a knife and posed absolutely no threat to anyone. Terrence and his mother were standing in the building hallway, outside of their apartment, with two EMTs when two police officers “just burst in and knocked me down and my son down and I heard a gunshot,” Coleman told reporters. “He did not have a knife.” The officers were outside of the building and burst in after one of the EMTs raised his voice to Terrence after he expressed hesitancy of going in the ambulance.

We believe Hope Coleman. Through countless cases we have all borne witness to across the country, we have come to one conclusion - the police lie. The culture of cover-ups and the blue wall of silence must be exposed and dismantled.

Suffolk County District Attorney Dan Conley refused to file charges against the officers. We demand that the criminal case of BPD officers Kevin Finn and Garrett Boyle be reopened. Much fanfare has been made about the new Black police commissioner William Gross. He can make good on this perception by some by immediately firing officers Finn and Boyle who remain on the force and remain a danger to the community. On April 4 of this year Hope Coleman filed a federal civil lawsuit against these officers, the former police commissioner William Evans and others for the wrongful death of her son.

Join the family for a vigil and speak-out against police brutality as we continue demand justice for Terrence Coleman.

The vigil and speak out will take place at 6pm in Peter’s Park (Terrence Coleman Park), 1277 Washington St, Boston, MA 02128

All Hope Coleman wanted that evening was help for her son, who had been living with schizophrenia for a number of years. So she called mental health staff and later 911 for an ambulance. Instead, the police responded and rather than help Terrence and his mother, the Boston Police killed him.

+ Re-open the case of the shooting death of Terrence Coleman!
+ Stop the harassment and intimidation of the Coleman family!
+ Indict BPD officers Kevin Finn and Garrett Boyle!
+ Immediately fire BPD officers Kevin Finn and Garrett Boyle!
+ Immediate financial compensation to the Coleman family for the wrongful death of Terrence Coleman!

To  An
Dear MoveOn member,
We're facing difficult times in America today. Hate on the rise. White supremacists marching openly in the streets. Bomb threats. And yesterday, gun violence in a place of worship.
But I've known difficult times before. I remember the "Whites Only" signs that hung above drinking fountains when I was a child. I remember when Black people risked their lives by trying to register to vote.
The civil rights movement lifted America from those particular policies of racist hate, but I am afraid that the hatred has never truly gone away.
Because right now, in Florida, Andrew Gillum, the progressive, trailblazing Tallahassee mayor who is in a close race to become Florida's first Black governor, is facing outrageous racist attacks during the final stretch of his campaign.
The people of Florida deserve the kind of governor that Andrew will be. He will lift up the people of Florida—and all of us in America—white, Black and brown. He is a powerful voice for Medicare for All, strong gun safety laws, LGBTQ equality, immigrant rights, and creating opportunities for all, not just a privileged few.1 Andrew is standing against the politics of hate to be a governor of all people.
I'm campaigning with Andrew all over Florida, and I'm asking you to help bring it home with a donation to Andrew's campaign. Are you with me?
I, along with countless others, sacrificed a lot for others to have the right to vote. I was jailed and beaten, even left bloody and unconscious. But what I suffered pales in comparison to our foremothers and forefathers who gave their lives.
Today, we cannot fail to exercise those rights that were paid for in blood and sacrifice.
Now, some people in America would like us to return to the days of rampant segregation and voter suppression. We're seeing Black people purged from the voter rolls and blocked from voting with racist voter ID laws and government officials complicit in acts of suppression. The Supreme Court has gutted key parts of the Voting Rights Act that we were marching for that day in Selma on the Edmund Pettus Bridge and throughout the entire civil rights movement.
One of the people who wants to take us back is Andrew Gillum's opponent for governor. He said Andrew would "monkey up" the state if he was elected.2 He accepted a donation from a man who called President Obama a "Muslim N-word."3 He is campaigning at neo-Nazi rallies, and his supporters are running racist and anti-Semitic robocalls.4,5
Andrew represents the polar opposite of all that hatred. He would be the first African-American elected governor of Florida, and he is running to represent all of the people of Florida and supporting policies that will help all Floridians thrive.
America is facing difficult times today, but we've faced harder times and come out stronger. We can do it again, and Andrew is the leader who will get us there. Will you help Andrew bring it home by making a donation to his campaign today?
Thanks for being in this fight.

Kevan Thakrar in Solitary Confinement for 8 years in the UK
Please write to your MP!

Dear friends,
Kevan Thakrar has been in solitary confinement in UK prisons for more than eight years. The UN has called for “an absolute prohibition” on solitary confinement over 15 days, while Amnesty International calls it “cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment”.
Mr Thakrar was first put in solitary confinement after he was exonerated in relation to a charge of assaulting prison officers. As a man of colour, he has been a consistent target for racism by staff.
We are campaigning to have Mr Thakrar released into general population immediately and need your help. Please write to your MP.  Below (and attached) you will find a template letter which has more details about Mr Thakrar’s situation which you can adapt as you choose and forward to your MP.  You can find the email address of your MP here.
Please also consider writing to Kevan and telling him what you are doing about his case.  His address is:

Template MP Letter in Support of Kevan Thakrar

Dear xxx MP:

As one of your constituents, I am asking for you to please intervene in the case of Kevan Thakrar prisoner (A4907AE) who has been held in solitary confinement (in a Close Supervision Centre – (CSC)) for more than eight years.
Until July 2018 he was being held in HMP Long Lartin where he was confined to his cell for more than 23 hours a day. His cell was filthy, stank and was infested with insects. As a result of protests and intervention by a member of parliament, he was moved to a “small-group isolation wing” in HMP Whitemoor and had more access to various facilities. However, shortly afterwards, giving a spurious reason that he was “not engaging with staff”, the prison moved him back onto a restrictive regime, confined to his cell for 23 hours a day.
Mr Thakrar was first put in solitary confinement over eight years ago after he was exonerated in relation to a charge of assaulting prison officers. It came out in court that Mr Thakrar had acted in self defence after himself being attacked by guards and being “physically and sexually abused by staff” -- some of which “regarded all non-white prisoners as Muslims and subjected them to constant anti-Muslim abuse”.
Recent evidence of racism within the prison system also raises concerns that Mr Thakrar may be being targeted because he is a man of colour.
[IF YOU WANT, PLEASE ADD SOMETHING ABOUT YOURSELF AND WHY YOU ARE CONCERNED]
The isolation that Mr Thakrar is subjected to is in breach of International law for the treatment of prisoners. The UN Special Rapporteur on torture called for “an absolute prohibition” of “indefinite and prolonged solitary confinement in excess of 15 days”.Amnesty International condemned CSC (known as Special Security Units at the time) saying that the lack of adequate exercise, sport, educational and work facilities, natural daylight and long-distance vision and adequate medical treatment, “constitute cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment.”
As far as I understand, the only justification for keeping someone in isolation is that they are a danger to others. But Mr Thakrar has not been convicted of any violent incidents during the 11 years he has been imprisoned. In 2014, a detailed psychological assessment concluded that his risk levels are so low that there is no reason for him to remain in the CSC. Mr Thakrar points to evidence that he is being discriminated against -- other prisoners who have been convicted of violence, including attacks which resulted in the death of fellow inmates, remain in general population.
There is also evidence which indicates that Mr Thakrar’s original conviction, based as it was on the discredited theory of Joint Enterprise and unreliable identification and hearsay evidence, was a miscarriage of justice. For more information on the case please go to: http://justiceforkevan.org/.
Can you please represent me on this matter and ask the minister responsible for an explanation, and investigate in other ways why Mr Thakrar has been in solitary for so many years. If the prison authorities claim to have good reasons for refusing to release Mr Thakrar into general population then that decision must be publicised so that it can be subjected to public scrutiny,
I feel strongly that we must insist on a high standard of care and accountability from those that have responsibility for prisoners. The treatment of Mr Thakrar has been appalling and the issue must be immediately remedied.
Yours sincerely,
