***Again,The Boogie Chillen” Man- The Boogie Blues Of John Lee Hooker

CD Review

The Very Best Of John Lee Hooker, John Lee Hooker, Rhino Records, 1995

I have noted elsewhere that in my blues pantheon John Lee Hooker does not stand with Howlin' Wolf, Muddy Waters, Bukka White, Skip James and others. Not because he doesn't have the skills to stand with the brethren but more a matter of personal choice. His sound just never down and dirty grabbed me (although some of his certainly lyrics qualify as down and dirty). So given those comments what is classic, what is "best of " here, according to my tastes. Well, hell just the lyrics alone to “I’m Bad Like Jesse James” rates as one of those here or there songs Hooker songs I mentioned above that I liked. Others may like the much covered “One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer”. (This may be the best way to state my case- George Thorogood’s version “speaks” to me mo' better.), “Boogie Chillen” and “I’m In The Mood” are exemplars of Hooker’s boogie guitar style.
