Dear All,

I hope you had a great spring break. The Joiner Institute is looking forward to Iraq War veteran and peace activist Paul K Chappell's visit next week for his talk "Why Peace Is Possible: Exploring the Anatomy of Violence and War" on Wednesday March 29th at 3:00 pm in Campus Ballroom B.

We hope you will invite students and classes in your department to attend Paul's lecture. We have Ballroom B in the Campus Center reserved with a capacity of 150 people. There will also be free pizza! Paul encourages conversation and dialogue so we hope students have some good questions to ask as well.

Attached is a primer on Paul's work that can be shared with students and professors to give a bit of background on Paul's work and project. Please feel free to share with your departments.

Let me know if you have any questions, we look forward to seeing you next week at Paul's talk. Click for the Facebook event and the UMB Event page.

Many thanks to our co-sponsors for helping make this event possible: UMass Boston Honors College, History Department, Philosophy Department, and Political Science Department.

My best,

Mitch

Join the Joiner Institute for a lecture by West Point graduate, Iraq War veteran turned devoted peace activist, and author, Paul K Chappell.

Visiting from the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation in Santa Barbara, CA, Paul K. Chappell will present students a thoughtful alternative to violence and warfare, and offer a peaceful way forward in a world that can seem fractured, divided, and violent. A rare lecture on the East Coast, Paul K. Chappell's talk is not to be missed!

Free pizza provided. Books will be available for purchase. Students and classes encouraged to attend. Free .pdf primer of Paul's writing available by request.

The son of a half-black and half-white father who fought in the Korean and Vietnam wars, and a Korean mother, Paul K. Chappell grew up in Alabama. He graduated from West Point in 2002, was deployed to Iraq, and left active duty in November 2009 as a captain. His whole life, he has sought answers to the issues of war and peace; rage and trauma; and vision, purpose, and hope. Paul K. Chappell serves as the peace leadership director for the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation (NAPF), whose mission is to educate and advocate for peace and a world free of nuclear weapons, and to empower peace leaders.

Co-sponsored by the UMass Boston Honors College, History Department, Philosophy Department, and Political Science Department.
