Despite ICE Retaliation 20 Women Continue on Hunger Strike
Solidarity and Fast Outside NWDC remains

Tacoma, WA – At least 20 women detained and 3 solidarity activists continue holding a hunger strike in protest of human rights abuses at the Northwest Detention Center (NWDC).  June 24th marks the 28th day since April that someone is on hunger strike at the NWDC this year alone.
Immigration & Customs Enforcement (ICE) Officers have denied a hunger strike has been taking place at the NWDC, but their presence and threats at the facility this week proves the opposite. ICE and Geo representatives “negotiated” with women on Friday and told them there was nothing they can do to meet their demands, including the one for better food and adding fruit to the menu. Strikers were told commissary prices couldn’t be reduced because that is the way it is in other detention centers.  Another person reported a lieutenant took away their documents regarding a potential case of human rights violations.

Women reported that the strike had reached close to 100 women when they found out another pod had joined this week. Due to retaliation, which included threats for hunger strikers to be sent to the doctors for IVs or transferred to the NorCor correctional facility in Oregon, and an unsuccessful negotiation, some women decided to stop their strike.
The remaining women on hunger strike inside the detention center have vowed to continue the hunger strike, while people outside have reached the 6th day without food at the 24-hour encampment they set up on Monday this week.

In addition to supporting the striker demands, organizers have begun to circulate an online petitiondemanding that City of Tacoma modify Tacoma Municipal Code to ensuring that residential facilities (including immigrant detention centers and juvenile detention centers) should only be located in areas zoned residential; renew the emergency ordinance to prevent expansion; and revoke GEO’s business license.

A community solidarity rally is scheduled to support the women on strike in the Northwest Detention Center today Saturday (6/24/17) at 12pm.
