As one of the two organizations sponsoring the Impeach Donald Trump Now petition that now has 1.2 million signers, RootsAction.org is launching today a new stage in the grassroots movement for impeachment.

The gap between the public interest to impeach Trump and the refusal to budge on Capitol Hill has become a chasm. We must change this.

The kind of headline that Newsweek recently featured is now routine: “Trump Impeachment Is Most Popular Solution Among Americans, Poll Says.” But only 3 of the 435 members of the House of Representatives have introduced an impeachment resolution or committed to doing so.

While we continue to support petition efforts, RootsAction is now launching the kind of grassroots campaign that Congress members care most about -- direct pressure from constituents.

By now you’ve probably received a lot of emails from groups saying they support impeachment. But a missing element is providing a quick easy way for people around the country to generate mass emails -- each one from a constituent to her or his representative in the House -- urging support for impeachment and directly asking for a clear response.

The RootsAction Impeachment Campaign is moving to fill that gap. Generalized calls for impeachment are not enough. They must be augmented by constituents who insist that their member of the House be held accountable to impeach this corrupt, unstable, bigoted and extremely dangerous man.

Right now, on the matter of impeachment in the House, the score is 3 Yeas out of 435. That’s unacceptable.

The two top Democrats in the House continue to firmly oppose any move to impeach Trump. In the words of Minority Whip Steny Hoyer, “We believe strongly that a discussion about impeachment is not timely.” While also emphatically telling House Democrats not to try to impeach Trump, the Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi declared that instead they should wait for Trump to “self-impeach.”

But impeachment is more than timely -- it’s overdue. And we reject the extremely dangerous idea that Americans should wait for the Trump presidency to self-destruct. This country has waited too long already.

Much like a decade ago when Rahm Emanuel -- then a Democratic leader in the House -- said the new Democratic majority in 2007 would keep the war on Iraq going for two more years in order to run "against" it again, the Democratic leaders now appear to want to keep Trump around in order to "oppose" him. We don't. We actually oppose him. It's time for him to go. Public pressure, well directed, can make it happen.

When congressional leaders intimidate colleagues so they don’t push forward for impeachment, it’s all the more crucial that Congress members receive strong counter-pressure from the grassroots. And that’s where the RootsAction Impeachment Campaign comes in.

On Inauguration Day, we joined in calling for impeachment of Trump based on his violations of the domestic and foreign emoluments clauses of the Constitution. Since then, his new impeachable offenses have included obstruction of justice. Other reasons to impeach include Trump’s inciting violence in the United States; interference with voting rights; discrimination based on religion; illegally threatening nuclear war; and abuse of pardon power.

Whichever reasons are most compelling to you, the overarching point is that we need to become more assertive with impeachment advocacy to those people who have the constitutional power to impeach President Trump -- the members of the U.S. House of Representatives.

In the next two minutes, use your power as a constituent to help move your representative toward impeachment.

And to support this vital impeachment campaign -- please donate whatever you can spare.
