Al,
We only have 11 years left to transform our society and stop climate change, and that means that the leaders we elect in 2020 might be the last ones who have a real shot at doing it. Because of that, we need to make sure that anyone who gets elected will champion the Green New Deal.
Right now, we have a key window of opportunity to do that by shaping the election debate as it's just getting started. This is our chance to make sure that the Green New Deal becomes a common sense policy that all the candidates support.
That’s why what happens at the second debate in Detroit is so important. We need to show up in force and let candidates know that if they want the votes of our generation, they need to make implementing the Green New Deal a top priority.
At the first debate in Miami, our movement gained so much ground. Through our 3 day sit-in at the Democratic National Committee in DC and the social media storm we unleashed at watch parties across the nation, we captured the nation’s attention and got Democratic leaders to actually consider a resolution to hold a climate debate.
Now, at the Detroit debate, we have an opportunity to build on our momentum. Right before the debate, we’re holding a two-day regional summit where we’ll train new leaders from across the Midwest to build our movement in their communities.
Then on debate day, thousands of us will gather outside of the debate in Detroit while thousands more gather at watch parties across the country. Together we will make our message heard loud and clear: we need a candidate who knows that we’re running out of time to stop the climate crisis, and who is ready to face that challenge seriously.
