This space is dedicated to the proposition that we need to know the history of the struggles on the left and of earlier progressive movements here and world-wide. If we can learn from the mistakes made in the past (as well as what went right) we can move forward in the future to create a more just and equitable society. We will be reviewing books, CDs, and movies we believe everyone needs to read, hear and look at as well as making commentary from time to time. Greg Green, site manager

Despite ICE Retaliation 20 Women Continue on Hunger Strike
Solidarity and Fast Outside NWDC remains
Tacoma, WA – At least 20 women detained and 3 solidarity activists continue holding a hunger strike in protest of human rights abuses at the Northwest Detention Center (NWDC). June 24th marks the 28th day since April that someone is on hunger strike at the NWDC this year alone.
Immigration & Customs Enforcement (ICE) Officers have denied a hunger strike has been taking place at the NWDC, but their presence and threats at the facility this week proves the opposite. ICE and Geo representatives
Women reported that the strike had reached close to 100 women when they found out another pod had joined this week. Due to retaliation, which included threats for hunger strikers to be sent to the doctors for IVs or transferred to the NorCor correctional facility in Oregon, and an unsuccessful negotiation, some women decided to stop their strike.
The remaining women on hunger strike
In addition to supporting the striker demands, organizers have begun to circulate an online petitiondemanding that City of Tacoma modify Tacoma Municipal Code to ensuring that residential facilities (including immigrant detention centers and juvenile detention centers) should only be located in areas zoned residential; renew the emergency ordinance to prevent expansion; and revoke GEO’s business license.
A community solidarity rally is scheduled to support the women on strike in the Northwest Detention Center today Saturday (6/24/17) at 12pm.
